Immunophenotyping Feline Myeloma-related Disorders

We have previously shown that cats with myeloma-related disorders (MRD) commonly present with marked extramedullary involvement (67% of cats versus 5% of humans with MRD) (Mellor et al 2006) and that morphological categorization of these tumors is consistent with an extramedullary origin in the majority of feline MRD (Mellor et al 2008). In this next study we will investigate further immunophenotypic markers that may help with sub-typing of these tumors. Improving the understanding of the possible tissue origins of these tumors and sub-typing may lead to better rationales for treatment and prognostication.

Study Design:
Retrospective

Inclusion Criteria:
Cats with a histopathological report of a plasma cell neoplasia / myeloma / plasmacytoma (ante-mortem tissue biopsy or necropsy material).

Exclusion Criteria:
Cats with other conditions or incomplete histopathological diagnosis.

Samples:
Dr Mellor simply requires permission from the primary clinician to request retrieval of the formalin fixed paraffin wax embedded tissue block, from the original laboratory that provided the diagnosis of a plasma cell neoplasm/ myeloma/ plasmacytoma.
