Tuesday, January 21, 2003What do you want to know TODAY?
Welcome to the HTML version of VIN This Week. We'd love your feedback on this newsletter and format, so email us your comments: feedback@vin.com. | VIN This Week Archives | Books | Thanks for using VIN!

The Compendium and MSDS have been updated!
The Compendium Of Veterinary Products Drug Labels and the Material Safety Data Sheets have just been updated. Click the Library button (main nav bar) and check these resources out.

Reminder!
Many of VIN's consultants will be at the NAVC. Some are lecturing; some are recharging their smart batteries. They will be checking in on their folders as often as they can, but responses might be a bit slower than usual at times. In the long run, we'll benefit from their participation at the NAVC, because they'll bring back all that nice new knowledge to share with those of us who couldn't attend ourselves!

If you are attending NAVC, stop by VIN's booth (#1835-1839) and say hello. We'd love to meet you in person!

For VIN Members Only:

Last year's, 2002 Western Veterinary Conference Notes are now available online to all VINners! Look in the VIN Library for the full text of over 700 speaker notes.

These Conference Notes give you a preview of the new Beta version of the VIN Search screen. As with all Beta releases on VIN, we value your feedback! Please send email to feedback@vin.com to tell us what you think.

MOPP Chemotherapy for Treatment of Resistant Lymphoma in Dogs: A Retrospective Study of 117 Cases (1989-2000)
Results of this study demonstrate that the MOPP protocol is an effective regimen to rescue dogs with lymphoma that have become refractory to or have failed to respond to previously administered chemotherapy.

Effects of Short-Term Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole Administration on Thyroid Function in Dogs
Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole at a dosage of 26.5 to 31.3 mg/kg, PO, every 12 hours can substantially alter serum total T4 and TSH concentrations and neutrophil counts in dogs within as short a time as a few weeks.

Anesthesia In Heart Block Dog
I have a Lab-X that was previously diagnosed with a complete heart block. We are planning a short anesthetic procedure and I was concerned about anesthetic risks. What kind of medications could I use to prevent a cardiac emergency with the anesthesia? Would an atropine dosage be adequate?

This Is The Worst Porcupine Quill Case I've Seen!
A few tips after years of pulling quills - check around the tonsils and epiglottis even if the dog didn't have quills in his mouth, use an otoscope to check up the nostrils (have found about 10 quills this way), and, if the dog has quills in his chest or in joint areas, pull these first as they can migrate in within minutes when the dog is moving or struggling.

A great veterinary staff is essential to the success of a veterinary practice. Recognizing the needs of veterinary staff, VIN created Veterinary Support Personnel Network several years ago. Membership in VSPN is free!

Patent airways are essential in the ABC's of emergency medicine. Do your veterinary technicians know how to troubleshoot and keep those artificial airways patent?

Here's your chance to have them take an in depth short course to prepare for their VTS certification in emergency critical care or to have them be better educated support staff.

Course Dates:
(Registration for this course closes on February 12.)
Course area is open from February 6 - 28
Real Time Sessions: Mondays; February 12 and 19; 9:30pm - 11:00pm ET (USA)
Click here to access the VSPN CE course info page and enrollment link. (Be sure that whomever will be taking the course is logged into VSPN before using the enrollment link to register.)
