TECH107-0203: Airway to Heaven Artificial Airways, Their Care and Management

INSTRUCTOR:
Dawn Perri, RVT

DATES:
February 6 February 28, 2003
Real Time Sessions: Wednesdays February 12 and 19; 9:30pm 11:00pm ET (USA)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Emergency life support, it's as easy as Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. There is a reason A comes first, and it isn't alphabetical order. Without a functional airway, breathing and circulation are of little use. Every veterinary technician, and especially the emergency veterinary technician needs to know how to evaluate airway patency, and how to establish an artificial airway if the patient isn't managing on her own.

This course will cover airway evaluation as well as techniques of obtaining and managing artificial airways. The course will consist of two ninety-minute real time sessions, detailed presentations with slides and step-by-step instructions for evaluating airway patency, oral endotracheal intubation, and endotracheal intubation via tracheostomy. The course will also cover long-term management of these artificial airways including permanent stomas. Multiple choice quizzes designed to enhance course effectiveness and material retention, as well as interactive message board discussion will be included in the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Rapidly and Accurately assess airway patency
  2. Perform oral endotracheal intubation with a standard intubation tube
  3. Prepare the patient and materials for emergency intubation via tracheostomy
  4. Perform transtracheal intubation with a catheter
  5. Be familiar with high frequency jet ventilation, and it's applications
  6. Care for and manage an artificial airway in the conscious or the unconscious patient.
COURSE OUTLINE:

Week 1: Airway assessment and emergency intubation techniques

Content: In this first week we will cover airway assessment. We will learn how to determine whether or not our patient is successfully moving air in and out of the lungs. We'll look at patterns of breathing as assessment tools, as well as auscultation. We will learn how to rapidly formulate action plans for dealing with non-patent airways, and we will cover step-by-step techniques of oral endotracheal intubation and transtracheal intubation with a catheter. We will also introduce high frequency ventilation and it's applications.

Week 2: Tracheostomy and long-term airway management techniques

Content: In the second week we will cover tracheostomy techniques, and we will learn how to prepare our patient and materials for an emergency tracheostomy. We will also cover techniques for long-term management of an artificial airway for the sedated patient with an oral endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube, and the conscious patient with a tracheostomy tube or permanent tracheal stoma.

LIBRARY:
Materials for each real time session will be posted in the library prior to the session so participants will be prepared. Please check the course library frequently. The addition of new materials will be announced in the course communications folder in the course message board.

MESSAGE BOARD DISCUSSIONS:
Course message boards will be open for one week following the last real time session.
