Veterinarians: No changes for CE requirements

Technicians: An extended grace period for certification renewal dues is being offered to help with the potential experience of financial hardship secondary to COVID-19. This extension will run through August 31, 2020. When submitting the recertification application in the past, dues were paid at the same time the application was submitted. The new renewal process offers the capacity to have invoices due at a later date but still reflect that a CVT is currently certified.

To be eligible for the extended grace period, you will still need to complete your renewal application prior to the June 30, 2020 deadline (including the application form and CE hour reporting with a minimum of 20 hours CE). An invoice for dues will be issued at the time your application is approved with a payment due date of August 31, 2020.

Veterinarians: The FVMA will not conduct any CE audits before January 2021. By taking this action, CE hours taken before December 31, 2020, can be used to satisfy the 30 hours required for renewal in the current biennium. Veterinarians who need hours taken after June 1, 2020 to meet the 30 hours required in the current biennium, however, should not expect to be able to count those same hours for the 2020-2022 biennium.

At this time, the Board does not anticipate extending the deadline for completion of continuing education for veterinarians in the current triennial license renewal period (through June 30, 2020). However, the Board is lifting the 20-hour limit on distance (online) education courses for continuing education credit for veterinarians for the current license renewal period. The veterinary technician continuing education reporting deadline for the current triennium is December 31, 2020. Nonetheless, the Board is lifting the 10-hour credit limit on home study (online) continuing education courses for those registrants who will renew by December 31, 2020.

In light of the State's COVID-19 response and the Governor's call for social distancing, the Maryland State Board has voted to allow Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) to meet all of their CE requirements with online courses when renewing their license registration for FY 2021 only. Normally, only 8 of the 24 CEs required during the three previous years may be done online. This requirement is being waived for FY21 license registration renewals only.

The Board previously voted to allow veterinarians to meet all of their CE requirements with online courses when renewing their veterinary license registration for FY 2021. Normally, at least 9 of the 18 required CEs must done in person. This requirement is being waived for FY21 license registration renewals only.
