The Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, was endangered in 1976. The National Marine Fisheries Service is responsible for research and a recovery plan for the monk seal.

The current research program is reviewed with a slide presentation on the monk seal. Seal medical problems are discussed along with two surgical cases.
