The Effect of Aspirin on Serum Lipids and Lipoproteins in Rabbits

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is one of the most important cause of death that happens in hyper lipidemia (4). The aim of this study is evaluating the effect of aspirin on level of blood lipids in rabbits as an experimental model.

Methods: Ten healthy rabbits were chosen. Blood samples were collected for determining the control values before the administration of aspirin. Aspirin was administered at doses of 10, 100, 200 and 500mg/kg for a period of 15 days. Blood samples were collected two times in 7th and 15th days of experiment. The period time between each dose was one month. In each serum sample the cholesterol, Triglyceride, total lipid, HDL- cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, VLDL- cholesterol and aspirin were measured (1,2,3,5). Data were analysed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis, using SPSS/PC software and Duncan´s multiple range test was used to detect significant differences among the means.

Results: Following the administration of different doses of aspirin (100, 200 and 500mg/kg B.W) , the concentration of cholesterol, Triglyceride, total lipid, HDL- cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, VLDL- cholesterol, significantly decreased (P< o.o5). Following the administration of 10 mg/kg B.W. aspirin no significant change was observed in serum lipids and lipoproteins. Duration time of aspirin administration had no significant effect on serum lipids and lipoproteins.

Discussion: Different doses of aspirin may cause significant decreases in the concentrations of serum lipids and lipoproteins. Dose-dependent effect was observed but time-dependent effects were not observed.
