Most veterinarians come in contact with wildlife once they get into private practice. The contacts are usually spur of the moment affairs because a client or simply a passerby has found an injured or abandoned animal and you, being a veterinarian, will know what to do. Veterinarians who are not familiar with state and federal laws governing wildlife can find themselves having to deal with legal issues that they had no idea existed prior to this encounter.

In addition, wildlife can carry many diseases or be exposed to injuries and toxins not readily encountered by veterinarians in their everyday practices. Handling wildlife can also be an adventure and veterinarians can be exposed to very fast moving hooves, teeth, claws and talons.

This discussion will identify the most common state and federal laws that veterinarians need to be aware of. Handouts and contact agencies will be provided as a reference source should you encounter a wild animal in your clinic. Wildlife agencies, whether state or federal, are interested in the same things as veterinarians when it comes to animals. That being the best care possible and the relief of distress for that animal. Insights into developing a relationship with your local authorities at whatever level you choose will be explored.

Some basic tips will be given for the care and handling of wildlife. Diseases and toxins not encountered in a normal practice will be identified along with some precautions needed to handle these animals safely. Veterinarians may become involved with clients who have commercial wildlife facilities usually dealing with large ungulates or large cats. Veterinarians may also encounter wildlife rehabilitation facilities dedicated to the care of sick, injured or orphaned wildlife. The laws governing such operations and some of the diseases encountered will also be discussed.
