Hereditary Evaluation of Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease in Toy and Miniature Breeds

Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease (LCPD) is a developmental disorder affecting the hip joint of small-breed puppies. Our study aims to identify (1) the mode of inheritance of LCPD in several small breeds and (2) candidate genes that may either cause the disease or be involved in the disease process through whole-genome association mapping.

To evaluate the use of a minimally invasive approach to perform hemilaminectomies in certain dogs with intervertebral disc herniations. A secondary goal is to compare the MIS hemilaminectomy to the standard approach. Where available, the long-term outcome of patients will also be included.

To ensure the success of the study Dr. Ned Patterson, DVM from the Canine Genetics Lab, Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences wants to obtain DNA samples and health information from more families (including siblings, parents, grandparents, offspring or distant relatives) in which one or more members has epilepsy.

Hereditary evaluation of spina bifida and cleft palate in brachycephalic dogs

We hope to identify candidate genes associated with canine structural birth defects, specifically spina bifida and cleft lip/palate in the bulldog and other brachycephalic breeds. This would allow us to develop a genetic test that could identify affected dogs and carrier dogs.
