Career vs. Family Life

This frustrating conundrum is the topic of December's Speak Out. AND - it's this week's VIN Survey. If you find this topic interesting, you may take the Veterinary Career Survey, Part 1, read the Speak Out, and participate in the discussion.

Synermed: Legal Ramifications

VINners who acquired Synermed equipment are discussing options available to them. Find out more...

Spontaneous hepatic rupture in six cats with systemic amyloidosis
Spontaneous hepatic rupture in six cats with systemic amyloidosis.
Most affected cats have been Siamese or a related breed and the disease is generally regarded as familial. In contrast, the cases presented here were sporadic, with relatives and other cats in the household not clinically affected. They included a Devon rex, a breed not previously reported with this condition, and a domestic shorthair.

Transposition of the sacrotuberous ligament for the treatment of coxofemoral luxation in dogs
Transposition of the sacrotuberous ligament to replace the teres ligament was successfully used to treat coxofemoral luxation in 10 dogs.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a mixed breed cat family
A pedigree survey revealed that the prevalence of HCM was at least 12.5% in the family

Surgical extraction of transplanted adult Dirofilaria immitis in cats
A jugular venotomy technique was developed to attempt extraction of Dirofilaria immitis in cats.

Fluid Therapy In Brain Injury
We know that maintaining adequate brain perfusion is one of the most critical aspects in the management of head injury. Because cerebral perfusion pressure = mean arterial pressure - intracranial pressure, it is very important that systemic hypotension is avoided at all costs. In people with head injury, the goal is to maintain arterial pressure greater than 90 mm Hg.

Ketamine CRI and Inducing with Ket/Val
If you are inducing using ketamine and valium, doesn't the loading dose of ketamine last long enough for a relatively short, less than an hour surgery? Don't the NMDA receptors require only microdoses? Aren't there micrograms of ketamine still in their system after induction?

Why Are Seizures More Prevalent At Night/During Sleep?
Over 20% of human epileptics have seizures mostly during sleep, specifically during slow-wave sleep...many epileptic dogs are more likely to suffer seizures when asleep or drowsy. The mechanism of this is not completely understood, but may be related to the brains electrical activity during sleep.

Rads of Pulmonary Stenosis Dog
Sternal contact - it counts but you really have to allow for both breed and individual variations. This is hard to do without an awful lot of experience. So, if in doubt, ignore it.
