VSPN Notebook
Originally published in 2002, the VSPN Notebook is NOT just for veterinary support staff. "I wish I had this when I was a student and new grad. It's filled with lots of the little factlets that I was always looking for, " says VIN co-founder Paul Pion. VIN members will find it online in the books section of the VIN Library. VSPN members should look for the banner on the VSPN front page or in the VSPN Library. You can also purchase a copy from the VIN Bookstore. You and your staff can also participate in the evolution of the Notebook by providing feedback on what you would like to see included, corrected, or updated.
So Many Drugs – So Little Time!
Remember the days when there were five antibiotics and two NSAIDs to choose from? How different the situation is today – when new drugs and products are released almost monthly and the nuances of polypharmacy make prescribing a challenge for individual patients. When you’re confused or looking for information on various therapeutic agents, consider visiting the Clinical Pharmacology Specialty Center. The Clinical Pharmacology Center contains sections on Drug FAQs, Controlled Drugs, FDA-NIH-USDA Drug Resources, and News about Drug Releases. One section houses all of the links to VIN’s various drug formularies in one convenient location. Links to related Journals and Proceedings, helpful websites, and Client Handouts can also be found in the Center. You'll find the Clinical Pharmacology Specialty Center through the About Page for the Clinical Pharmacology Message Board and the Specialty Centers section of the VIN Library.

Hey... Watch This!
Over the years, many VINners have suggested that a video procedures manual would be a great addition to the VIN Library. Now, VIN Mentor is on Beta.vin.com and ready to help first-timers and those who might just be a little rusty. Mentor includes videos of complete medical procedures with narration, step-by-step instructions, accompanying materials lists, and enough information to help you perform the procedures with success. You can also print a PDF for each procedure and take it with you as you perform each procedure. At the moment, the videos are mostly procedures commonly performed in the ER, but as the collection grows it will include procedures from many disciplines (including exotic species). To suggest a procedure for inclusion, or contribute your own videos, please email Tony@vin.com.

Balloon dilation of oesophageal strictures in two horses

Follow-up endoscopic and radiological examinations performed 6 weeks after the procedure showed clear dilation of the strictures. Both horses did not have any recurrence during follow-up periods of 10 and 12 months.
Megavesica in a neonatal foal
A newborn male foal was diagnosed with a greatly enlarged urinary bladder (megavesica), a urinary bladder diverticulum, and a herniated and abnormal umbilical remnant. Approximately 50% of the cranial bladder, including the abnormal structures, was surgically resected; the foal recovered and was still asymptomatic 15 months after surgery.

Kitten With Uveitis Responded To Treatment, Then Developed Neurologic Signs And Died: Is Rabies Testing Recommended? Can It Be Done If Body Was Buried?
You'd be surprised how little decomposition occurs when bodies are kept out of the ambient environment and away from insect activity. So, while it's not ideal to necropsy/test a carcass that has been buried or frozen, it can be done and diagnostic information can be obtained.
Synovial Sarcoma Over The Carpus Of A Cat
None of us really knows much about synovial cell sarcomas in cats, as these have been very rarely reported. Many of the few reported cases did not seem to develop metastasis during the time they were followed.
Surprise! Dental Radiography Uncovered Disease In My Own Dog
As to owners saying, "my pet never seemed painful," I believe them. After I diagnosed the slab fracture last night, Mellie picked up a rawhide and started chewing on it!
