VECCS/VIN Rounds:
Nursing Strategies for Respiratory Emergencies
If respiratory emergencies make you hyperventilate, join Andrea Steele, MSc, RVT, VTS(ECC) this Monday, November 26, 9 PM ET to learn management techniques that you can use and some that you can delegate to your technicians.
*This session will be all text, no audio.

NOTE: The time for this session was listed incorrectly in the previous issue of VTW. We apologize for any confusion!

If you can't attend, check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN, or next Tuesday's VIN This Week, for links to the transcript of the discussion.

Put Your Skills to the Test in the Interactive Learning Center
Want to challenge your diagnostic skills? Find interactive case studies like these in the Interactive Learning Center (located in the Multimedia section of the VIN Library).

Learning can be fun! Check out the Acute Hemorrhage Simulator, Concentration Game or Veterinary Medicine Review Flashcards under Tutorial Simulations and Games.

Send us your feedback and let us know what you think and what tools you'd like to see added!

As a Matter of FAQ
The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because some topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of "hits" can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards.

Save time and check out the Medical FAQs before you post. Find them in the VIN Library or through the VINDEX (Ctrl+E).

Newest FAQs:

Convert Proceedings Documents to PDF for Offline Viewing!
Mobile devices make it easy to stay connected to your home or business no matter where you are, but some situations force you to cut that tie to the world wide web. Never fear! Now, when registered for a conference with VIN-hosted Proceedings, you can convert conference proceedings articles to PDFs that you can view on your mobile device even when you don't have an internet connection.

The VIN Wizards have tested this feature on iPad, iPhone, Android, and Kindle Fire. If you aren't able to use this feature on your mobile device, please don't hesitate to let us know!

Note: To view PDFs on your mobile device, you'll need a PDF viewer. iBooks (for iPhone/iPad) and Adobe Reader (for iPhone/iPad, Android, or Kindle Fire) are free. There are also some great and inexpensive apps that let you do more manipulation/highlighting/note-taking.

Ultrasonography: Diagnostic Value Of Selective Organ Evaluation In Dogs And Cats That Have Urinary Tract Diseases
If you broaden the scope of the question, doing a "select" ultrasound isn't a lot different that choosing a lab panel. We pick and choose blood and urine tests based on what we think are reasonable differentials for the clinical presentation of the patient.

CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) Versus OFA's (Orthopedic Foundation For Animals) New Eye Certification Registry Database (ECR) For Dogs
The ACVO (American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists) basically had some problems with CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) not being very responsive to requests for data and other items, so has decided to move from working with CERF to ECR (Eye Certification Registry), which has been created by OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals). ACVO diplomates will be submitting all eye exams to OFA now, not CERF.

Economic Impact Of Supply Vs. Demand For Veterinarians; Is There Anything We Can Do?
More vets = less demand = more competition for services = harder to make living as a vet, which is where we are currently heading. Fewer vets = more demand = more ability to charge for services, which is what we need to do.

Pet Store Is Advising Clients To Stop Giving Heartworm Preventatives To Dogs: What Should I Do?
It really infuriates me that this store is distributing information that is blatantly not true and making us look like the bad guys to boot. How should I address this?
