CRIs Beyond MLK
Constant rate infusions can be incredibly useful if you take a step beyond mixing a one-size-fits-all cocktail. Join Sean Smarick, VMD, DACVECC, this Sunday night at 10 p.m. ET and see how you can use CRIs in a multitude of ways.

If you can't attend, check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN, or next Tuesday's VIN This Week, for links to the transcript of the discussion.

Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday!
Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 4, 2012, at 2 a.m. in the USA, except in Arizona and Hawaii. See if and when it applies in your neck of the woods. Remember to move your clocks back 1 hour!

As of Sunday, November 4, VIN time will be GMT -5 hours (e.g. - 8 a.m. GMT = 3 a.m. VIN time).

Veterinary Forms and Client Handouts Collection
Thanks to the generosity of VINners, the Veterinary Forms Collection contains a variety of sample forms, clip art, and handouts.

Browse the collection using the categories on the left for:

  • Admission and Drop-off Forms
  • Consent Forms
  • Dental Forms
  • Health Certificates
  • Maintenance Logs
  • ...and much much more!

Many of the forms can be downloaded as MS Word files that you can modify for use in your practice. More client handouts can be found in the Forms and Handouts section of the VIN Library.

Want to share your favorite forms with other VINners? E-mail the text (or a scanned image) of the form to VINdatabase@vin.com or send a copy of the form via snail mail to 777 W. Covell Blvd., Davis, CA 95616. Be sure to include your name, telephone number and e-mail address with the copy.

Hormones Running Amok?
Do you have a diabetic patient that's difficult to regulate? Are you frustrated with trying to interpret adrenal function tests? The Endocrinology Specialty Center has plenty of tools to help you manage your endocrine cases:

  • Glucose Curve Calculator
  • Trilostane Dosing Tool
  • Sections on adrenal, thyroid, pituitary, and parathyroid diseases
  • Numerous client handouts
  • Links to related journals, proceedings, websites and rounds

Reach the Endocrinology Specialty Center through the About Page for the Endocrinology and Reproduction message folders and the Specialty Centers section of the VIN Library.

Presenter for Mobile Devices
More and more VINners are using VIN from their mobile devices. Some VIN features are built with Adobe FLASH technology which makes them incompatible with some mobile devices, especially those from Apple. This has made it challenging to accomplish the goal of making all VIN features mobile friendly, but as the saying goes... Rome wasn't built in a day!

It took a little more than a day, but the VIN Wizards have created a brand new version of Presenter that allows you to view slideshow images on your mobile device. Now you can scroll through images in a slideshow using the 'Previous' and 'Next' buttons in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen or choose an image from 'Gallery' view.

Get a quick overview and then try it from your mobile device. As always, let us know if you have any trouble using it from your device.

Use of a medetomidine-ketamine combination for anesthesia in captive common hippopotami (Hippopotamus amphibius)
A combination of medetomidine (60 to 80 mg/kg [27.3 to 36.4 mg/lb]) and ketamine (1 mg/kg [0.45 mg/lb]) was administered IM on the basis of mean estimated weights of 1,330 ± 333 kg (2,926 ± 733 lb; median, 1,350 kg [2,790 lb]; range, 900 to 2,000 kg [1,980 to 4,400 lb]). Monitoring included sequential blood gas analyses, pulse oximetry, and capnography. Reversal of anesthesia with atipamezole (0.34 ± 0.06 mg/kg [0.15 ± 0.027 mg/lb]; median, 0.33 mg/kg [0.15 mg/lb]; range, 300 to 500 mg total dose]) was uneventful and rapid in all cases.

Suspected poisoning of cattle by scarlet pimpernel (Lysimachia arvensis L.)
The ingestion of scarlet pimpernel (Lysimachia arvensis L.), also known as red chickweed, has been reported as a cause of death of cattle in Uruguay, and as the suspected cause of deaths of sheep in Australia. It has not previously been reported in association with deaths of cattle in Australia. We report the clinical and pathological findings from four cattle in western Victoria that died with a nephrosis suspected to be secondary to intoxication with scarlet pimpernel.

Feline idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease: what we know and what remains to be unraveled
Feline idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) denotes one form of chronic enteropathy that is immunologically mediated and characterized by persistent or recurrent gastrointestinal (GI) signs and histologic inflammation. Signs of vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss generally predominate, and mucosal inflammation may occur in any portion of the GI tract (especially the small intestine). Affected cats may also have concurrent inflammation in other organs, such as the pancreas and liver, which may impact clinical disease severity.

Blue And Gold Macaw Suddenly Showing Aggression To Some Family Members: Behavior Therapy Recommendations
The bird didn't just randomly bounce into this stage. This is the end result of a combination of errors/problems that have led to this bird now feeling that she can 'correct' people who transgress her rules. The canine equivalent would be an 18-month-old Rottweiler who growls and lunges at the owners.

Firing a Receptionist Who Is Facebook Friends With Clients
Do *not* ask her to log on in front of you and unfriend clients. There are more and more cases going through the courts where employers have exceeded their rights in this regard, violating state and common-law privacy laws.

Technician Socializes With Other Staff Members: Can I Prohibit This If She Is Promoted To Manager?
As an employer, you must be very careful in attempting to regulate your employees’ off duty conduct.

Grape/Raisin Poisoning: When To Recheck Bloodwork After Diuresis, And How Many Grapes Or Raisins Are Toxic?
Unfortunately, it's hard to put a toxic dose on natural toxins unless it's in some standardized form, since the levels will vary with a lot of conditions (climate, growing environment, etc.). Until we figure out what's going on with grapes and raisins, I'm going to consider any exposure to the fruit to be significant.

The VINDEX contains links to the most used and useful (or hard to find) VIN features.

The VINDEX is located on the upper right side of the Front Page, just below the navigation bar and is a handy tool to help you find many of the most popular VIN features. But if you really want to see the magic, from any page on VIN hold down your Ctrl button and push the “E” on your keyboard (Ctrl+E). So the next time you are looking for the VIN Bookstore or the calculator you used a few weeks ago, use the VINDEX.

Murphy's Laws of Vet Med
If you send staff home early because you're slow, patients will reliably come in. This is especially true if there are no patients in the hospital, the phone has been silent for hours, your technician is on his 22nd hour of overtime this week, and his wife is calling to report that the new baby is sick.
