Urinary Tract Antimicrobial Guidelines
In 2010, the International Society for Companion Animal Disease established an Antimicrobial Guidelines Working Group with expertise in infectious disease and antimicrobial use.

The first set of guidelines published are for urinary tract infections in dogs and cats.

The Antimicrobial Guidelines 2011 have been added to the Library in the following locations besides the New Additions column:

1. Guidelines, Notes & Lectures page of the VIN Library.
2. FAQs page of the Uro-Nephrology, Internal Medicine-Canine and Infectious Diseases Specialty Centers.

Time-Bites: Bringing Veterinary History Alive
The American Veterinary Medical History Society (AVMHS) is pleased to share the rich heritage of veterinary medicine through a series of short Time-Bites. View these nuggets - anatomical theaters for public entertainment, the quill suture from the 1940s, 14th century advice on caring for hunting hounds and more - in the VIN Library.

Abdominal radiographic and ultrasonographic findings in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) with systemic coronavirus infection
Although imaging techniques provide additional information in the antemortem diagnosis, they can not replace the definitive diagnosis based on histological and immunohistochemical results.

Leukoencephalomalacia and laminar neuronal necrosis following smoke inhalation in a dog
At necropsy 9 days after smoke inhalation, leukoencephalomalacia of the central cerebral white matter was accompanied by laminar necrosis of cerebrocortical neurons. This is the first report of delayed posthypoxic leukoencephalopathy in a nonhuman animal.

Cat with traumatic dental malocclusion now has chronic nasal discharge (photos)
Itsy Bitsy is a 4.5-year-old SF DSH who I saw for the first time yesterday. History from the owner included chronic history of bilateral nasal discharge (currently more severe on the right side). This cat has a severe Class II malocclusion with both mandibular canine incisors (# 304 and # 404) penetrating the cat's hard palate in their entirety. The holes in the palate have no discharge, erythema, or swelling associated with them. Pictures of the mouth are below, please let me know what you think. Our current plan in addition to the initial bloods / PCR is a trial of azithromycin (already scripted out to owner), PO Lysine treats, and recommendation to extract both lower canine incisors whether they are the cause of the discharge or not!

Breeder trimmed the deciduous base narrow canine teeth in a puppy
I have been seeing a little Airedale Terrier, now 13 weeks old for ~1 month. On the first visit I was informed that the breeder had to "do something to some of her teeth." When I opened her mouth I was horrified. The breeder had cut off half of the lower primary canines because they were base narrow and hitting the hard palate. I explained to owner that this was completely inappropriate, borderline animal abuse and definitely inhumane and unethical. We scheduled extraction of both lower primary canines for the next day, which was completed. The puppy is now comfortable and doing fine. My client wants her money back at this point, mostly because the breeder has since made some personal slams against their "young vet who dabbles in dentals," i.e. ME, and has told her numerous times to "find a new vet."

Potential toxic effects of long-term use of topical insecticides
The ads are all over TV for the Frontline Plus generics. We can get and sell it as a "vet product" under the name Ecto Advance. The active ingredients look the same. Head to head studies against Frontline Plus, using twenty-some dogs and cats, looks impressive. My best clients are already asking about it. Is there anything subpar about this generic product, or should I just give up my Frontline sales?
