Congenital hypothyroidism and dysmaturity syndrome in foals: First reported cases in Europe
This syndrome is characterised by hyperplasia of the thyroid gland, increased gestational length, and multiple congenital musculoskeletal abnormalities.

Seroprevalence and exposure to risk factors for leptospirosis among veterinary students at Massey University
All students were MAT negative for each serovar, using a cut-point of >1:48. Potential exposure to animal urine within and outside the veterinary curriculum was reported by 259/302 (85.8%) and 150/302 (49.7%) of the students, respectively.

Cardiac Lesions in 30 Dogs Naturally Infected With Leishmania infantum chagasi
Myocardial lesions were detected in all dogs, including lymphoplasmacytic myocarditis (27/30), myonecrosis (24/30), increased interstitial collagen (22/30), lepromatous-type granulomatous myocarditis (7/30), fibrinoid vascular change (3/30), and vasculitis (1/30). The parasite was detected in the hearts of 20 of 30 dogs.

Pet Store Mouse With Pruritus And Crusting Of Face And Ears
The ear ulcerative dermatitis cases can be very frustrating to treat. Once the mouse has started itching off parts of the pinna, that is usually what I would consider as an "endpoint" of when euthanasia would be recommended. So this one would kind of be on the edge for me.

Hospitalized Cats: Is It A Good Idea To Use Shredded Paper Instead Of Cat Litter?
Shredded paper is used by some, and it's not unusual to see it post-declaw or when there's an injury on the foot. But there will be a subset of cats that don't eliminate in it. That can lead to stress, but I'd also worry about urine retention and even learned inappropriate (box aversion) elimination when the cat goes back home.

How To Keep Using An Older Ultrasound Machine
What I have described above is meant to be a short time fix. I would rather see you get a more modern machine that could capture and export DICOM images. If the ultrasound machine still works for you, go ahead and use it.

Rectal Perforation During A Rectal Examination In A Dog With Peritonitis: How Could This Have Happened?
I don't think you can kill a dog with a rectal exam unless you're Edward Scissorhands, so I would just keep doing your rectal exams as normal.

What's the best thing to happen to you today?
I woke up (gently) the homeless person sleeping in the alcove by our front door by saying, "Good morning. Good morning."

He thanked me for being kind, and I reminded him that he was a human and deserved kindness. He told me that he wasn't feeling that from the world right now, and I pointed out that someone had left him a banana and granola bars, and asked him if he had money to get a hot beverage with his breakfast. He said he didn't.

This guy was bright eyed, obviously not on anything, so I handed him the five dollar bill I had pulled out and said, "Today the world is reminding you that we're all in this together, and we should treat other living creatures with kindness, especially humans."

      Crazy Things Pet Owners Do
My cat Simon loves to carry shoes up the flight of stairs from our main floor entry to the second floor living space. If I put the shoes away, he will open the closet to get them out, or find replacements (pens, socks, hand towels, sweaters, small couch cushions, and in one memorable instance, a houseguest's jockstrap).

But, leave him 2 shoes to drag around, and he's happy. So Simon has his "own" pair of shoes to drag up and down the stairs, and all the other shoes are put away in the closet where he leaves them alone as long as he has "his" shoes. They have so many little teeth marks in them.

And when I want to eat string cheese in peace, I go into the bathroom, shut the door, and turn the fan on so he can't hear the wrapper ripping open...
