How to Establish a Blood Bank
Establishing a blood bank can ensure that there is an available supply of blood, plasma, and platelets sufficient to meet a clinic’s transfusion needs. Wondering where to begin? VIN consultant, Dr. Sally Lester (with videos by Dr. Joe Musielak) has created a Blood Banking Manual to help you answer this question. Thanks Sally (and Joe)! Find the Blood Banking Manual in the Books section of the VIN Library and in the Hematology & Emergency Medicine Specialty Centers.

Granulosa thecal cell tumour in a mare causing hypertrophic osteopathy
Hypertrophic osteopathy (HO) is a rare condition in the horse characterised by symmetrical proliferation of connective tissue and subperiosteal bone, along the diaphyses of limb bones. In this case, a 10-year-old Irish Draught cross Thoroughbred mare was presented for investigation of weight loss, lethargy and firm swelling of all 4 distal limbs.
Cholesteatoma after lateral bulla osteotomy in two brachycephalic dogs
This report describes a French bulldog and a pug that presented to the authors' hospital following total ear canal ablation (TECA) and lateral bulla osteotomy (LBO), with signs of recurring otitis media and difficulty opening their mouths. The bulldog also had unilateral facial paralysis and sensory deficits of the trigeminal nerve on the ipsilateral side. Computed tomography and MRI scans suggested cholesteatoma in the bulldog, but showed only slight enlargement of the bulla in the pug. Histopathologic examination of samples yielded cholesteatoma in both cases.
Preliminary studies of chemical immobilization of captive juvenile estuarine (Crocodylus porosus) and Australian freshwater (C. johnstoni) crocodiles with medetomidine and reversal with atipamezole
Medetomidine administered in the thoracic limb of captive estuarine and Australian freshwater crocodiles, ranging from 3 to 12.8 kg, provides a predictable onset and duration of immobilization sufficient for physical examination, sample collection, short minor procedures and translocation of the animals. Atipamezole administered in the thoracic limb results in complete reversal of the effects of medetomidine in the estuarine crocodile and a rapid return to normal behaviour.

Frontline Is Available Online For Less Than It Costs Me; Ethics Of Pharmaceutical Companies
Veterinarians are customers of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Nothing more, nothing less. I have never understood why veterinarians thought that pharmaceutical manufacturers were their friends.
Keeping Track Of Controlled Drugs; Legal Difference Between Prescribing And Administering Controlled Substances
We in the veterinary profession think of "prescribe" as something that happens outside of the practice (i.e., at a retail pharmacy). However, the definition of prescribe in the DEA rules is ...

Halloween pumpkins Actually... I have what I have deemed an "Epic, multipumpkin masterpiece" in the works. Considering my history of superhero pumpkins, I thought it was only fitting... The Avengers! My plan is a 4 pumpkin piece composed of Black Widow and Hawkeye on one pumpkin, Thor and Captain America on another, The Hulk on one by himself, and Iron Man as the Centerpiece tying them all together. Here are my patterns so far... not sure I can pull it all off, but if I can, I think it will be great!
