Linking the Veterinary Healthcare Team
October 10-16 is National Veterinary Technician Week. Technicians play a vital role in the veterinary healthcare team. Have you told your technicians how much you appreciate them? Maybe today should be the day!

As the national association representing veterinary technicians, NAVTA realizes that a true celebration of National Veterinary Technician Week relies on participation of state associations, student chapters, and our members.

The Veterinary Support Personnel Network (VSPN) is a FREE online community for veterinary hospital staff. VIN provides VSPN for your staff as a benefit to you and your colleagues. VSPN offers your staff access to information and a community of their peers. If they're not already members, encourage your staff to sign up for their free VSPN membership at www.vspn.org.

About those 'About this Folder' Pages...
A little birdy told us you'd like to be able to access your favorite links, consultant profiles and other resources on the 'About this Folder' pages without having to go to the Message Boards to find them.

We thought that was a great idea so we added all of the 'About this Folder' pages to their own special page in the VIN Library.

This same 'About this Folder' page can be opened instantly from anywhere on VIN using the VINDEX -- just hit CTRL-E (Control and E keys at the same time) and choose "About this Folder Pages." Try it -- you'll like it!

If you have any bright ideas or suggestions, don't leave it up to the little birdy... send them to Feedback@vin.com!

Corneal squamous cell carcinoma in two dogs
The prominent features of the cases were a clinical history of pigmentary keratitis and chronic keratitis. In each case, a corneal mass was surgically removed with a superficial keratectomy and histologically diagnosed as corneal SCC. Both masses were negative for p53. To reduce chronic corneal irritation, 0.1% hyaluronate sodium ophthalmic solution was applied. After more than 15 months of postsurgical follow-up, there has been no recurrence of either neoplasm.

Stability of 0.5% cidofovir stored under various conditions for up to 6 months
0.5% cidofovir demonstrated stable antiviral activity when stored for up to 6 months in glass or plastic, at 4, -20, and -80 degrees C.

Pathogenesis and pathology of bovine pneumonia
Bacterial pneumonias consist of bronchopneumonia, fibrinous pneumonia, and pleuropneumonia, as well as caseonecrotic, aspiration, and tuberculous pneumonias. Two major patterns of interstitial pneumonia are recognized in cattle, and verminous pneumonia is associated with Dictyocaulus viviparus infection.

Changes in California health certificates
We have been using copies of the pink forms so they are white and had no problems. However the latest CVMA journal says these will no longer be valid after Jan 1, 2011. After that date, all national and international travel will require that triplicate form 7001, I believe it is called. Nice how they let us all know, right?

Laboratory's interpretation of dog's positive heartworm test is that she has a low burden and is not at risk of problems: Is this correct?
We are in an endemic heartworm area in Ontario, Canada. Rosie is a 5-year old s/f, terrier mix, has been annually vaccinated and HW neg, and placed on Revolution as a pup and for the following 3 years from May until November. In 2009, Rosie missed vaccines, HW test and HW prevention. On a routine wellness exam in May, 2010, prior to dentistry on Rosie, IDEXX returned a weak positive on HW ELISA test and microfilariae filter test was negative. The rest of the bloodwork (chem / cbc / electrolytes) was WNL. IDEXX suggested to follow up one week later with another ELISA test, performed in late afternoon, when microfilariae are more active. We did this and the ELISA test came back negative.

Feral cat range in suburban neighborhoods
Do we have good information on what the range is of a feral cat population in suburban neighborhoods? How long do feral kittens typically continue to nurse before being tossed by the mother?

Horse with severe wounds to axillary region: Pictures show wound progress through the healing phases
Although I can stick my hand up into the space between the leg and the body wall, she was fortunate enough not to hit any major vessels and avoid any entrance into the thoracic cavity. We found her several hours after it happened and the wound had already started to dry out. We trimmed up the ragged edges and the two long strips of flesh that were hanging down to her fetlock.

    Generic Veterinary Guy is VINner
Over the last few years I have seen this "veterinarian" posted in multiple ads, always with the same dog and occasionally with a female technician. I'm curious if he is a real veterinarian or just a model who gets around? I have seen him in ads for Andis Lightspeed Clippers, Simmons and Associates, Merial's Word Rabies Day promotion, the Indoor Fence website and elsewhere. Does anyone recognize him? We have taken to calling him "Generic Veterinary Guy" at our hospital. It has almost become a game when we see him in an ad.
