Trick or Treat or a Trip to the ER?
Boo! Halloween candy is already on store shelves! Let VIN help you handle the spooky side of the holiday festivities.

The Medical FAQ on Dangerous Foods will help you educate your staff and clients about potential problems associated with feeding pets chocolate and other candies.

Some other VIN resources that will come in handy:

When you've finished brushing up on potentially dangerous foods, take a moment to enjoy some past Halloween memories shared by VINners (and post your own if you've got 'em!).

Educate your Clients
Help your clients to be better informed pet owners with the Client Education Resources in the VIN Library. Find even more no-cost, advertising-free, independent online information that you can trust at VeterinaryPartner.com.

The VIN Client Brochure was created as an easy way to explain to clients how being a VIN member impacts the quality of veterinary care that you provide. It also highlights the VIN client handout website, VeterinaryPartner.com, where your clients can go to learn more about a health issue concerning their pets. VIN members can order a pack of 25 brochures for FREE in the VIN Bookstore.

VIN for Mobile Devices has a NEW ADDRESS: mobile.vin.com

Upload Images to the VIN Message Boards from your Mobile Device!

If you have an Android powered device or any Apple device running iOS6, now you can upload images to the VIN message boards directly from your mobile device.

The VIN Geeks and Wizards have tested on the following devices with encouraging success:

  • iPad 2/3
  • iPhone 3, 4(s) and 5
  • Nexus 7
  • Thrive
  • Sony S
  • Nook
  • BlackBerry PlayBook

You can also take a photo and have it posted directly to the message boards from your device within seconds! Keep in mind that images taken with a mobile device are sometimes lacking in picture quality. Take care when using images posted from your mobile device in posts where you are requesting medical opinions on the message boards.

Remember, whether you're using your mobile device or your desktop, you can only attach one (1) image per post, so you'll still need to create a separate reply for each image you want to post.

As you know, new features often have bugs to work out, but early testing looks encouraging!

Read more about how to post images to Message Boards or watch this video.

If you want to be on the "bleeding edge" make Beta.vin.com your VIN Homepage.

Evaluation of a modification of the McKinnon technique to correct urine pooling in mares
Modifying the McKinnon technique by transversely splitting the urethral fold and retracting the dorsal half helps prevent a defect from forming in the cranial portion of the extension.

Current British veterinary attitudes to the use of perioperative antimicrobials in small animal surgery
The percentage of respondents who always used antimicrobials in two surgical procedures classified according to NRC criteria as 'clean' was 25.3 per cent for removal of a 1 cm cutaneous mass and 32.1 per cent for routine prescrotal castration.

Acute phase protein levels in dogs with mast cell tumours and sarcomas
The acute phase proteins (APP) form part of a non-specific host response to inflammation. They may be induced by a range of different causes, including infection, inflammation, cancer and trauma. As they form part of the earliest response to such insults, they have potential for early identification of disease.

Any Advice On How To Price Digital Radiographs?
I have seen references suggesting a radiographic study should cost the client about three times the Exam Fee.

Treatment And Prognosis For Turtle With Severe Dog Bites (Photographs)
The prognosis will depend on what is damaged. Some of these can do surprisingly well if no important structures are damaged and all necrotic, infected material is removed.

Ohio State To Open A New Emergency And Referral Facility
Why am I upset? Because a university should teach and perform research. They do not need to set up a private for-profit hospital in the community.

Extraction Technique For The Carnassial Teeth In Dogs
When I teach wet labs, my observation is that general practitioners are so paralyzed with fear of fracturing roots that they apply such tentative pressure that there is not only no risk of fracturing the root, there is also no risk of ever getting the tooth out.

Sex Changes
My first two patients on my anesthesia rotation when I was a senior were a pair of Doberman sisters for OVH that were named Fred and Floyd. That was the same week that I was responsible for the anesthesia for a bunny OVH.

Bunny belonged to a graduate student in zoology who was MORTIFIED when the student in charge of the surgery called her to tell her that the bunny had dropped his testicles when he was anesthetized and did she want us to neuter him? "I'm a ZOOLOGY STUDENT! I should KNOW these things!"
