VINx Presents VetTexts!
Communicating with your clients can be challenging, in more ways than one! VetTexts from VINx can't help you explain diabetes in cats, but with VetTexts you can message clients about appointments, patient updates, and more -- all from one central location.

Clients will love your cutting-edge technology, and you won't have to worry about losing the hospital's mobile phone in someone's pocket or desk.

VINx can help streamline your practice management, enhance your patient care, and strengthen your client relationships. These tools are FREE with your VIN membership.

More Funny Things Clients Have Said To Us
I was reviewing dosing with a client, and said to give 50cc a day (sq fluids).
"Is that a 10 hour day, 12 hours day or 24 hour day?"
Pause, stare.
"Let's go with the standard 24 hour day on this one"

Occlusal Issues
(Free full-text available)

The wild phenotype of domestic dogs and cats has interdigitating cheek teeth that create a pinking shears effect, a mandibular canine tooth that interdigitates with the maxillary third incisor and canine tooth, and mandibular incisors that rest on the cingulae of the maxillary incisors. This model of occlusion has been naturally selected as the most efficient and durable for grabbing, holding, tearing, and masticating a predator’s diet.

Breed differences in insulin sensitivity and insulinemic responses to oral glucose in horses and ponies of moderate body condition score
The peak insulin concentration was higher in ponies (94.1 ± 29.1 µIU/mL) and Andalusians (85.3 ± 18.6) than in Standardbreds (21.2 ± 3.5). The insulin area under the curve was also higher in ponies (13.5 ± 3.6 IU·min·L(-1)) and Andalusians (15.0 ± 2.7) than in Standardbreds (3.1 ± 0.6).

Cervical spinal intradural arachnoid cysts in related, young pugs
Pedigree analysis suggested a genetic predisposition for spinal arachnoid cysts in this family of pugs. Generalised proprioceptive deficits more pronounced in the thoracic limbs suggesting a focal cervical spinal cord lesion, with concomitant skin abrasions on the dorsal aspect of the thoracic limbs in a young pug, should alert veterinarians to the possibility of cervical spinal arachnoid cysts.

Is It Legal To Dispense Medications To A Vacationer Who Is Not My Client, But Has A Prescription From His Veterinarian?
Some states allow veterinary clinics to act as a pharmacy and fill prescriptions from other vets. Others don't. Call your state VMA or Board and ask.

Should Mobile Euthanasia Services Notify General Practice Veterinarians When One Of Its Patients Is Euthanized?
I always ask if the owners would like me to notify their regular vet. I get about 1/3 of folks that would like me to, about 1/3 that say they don't have a regular vet, and about 1/3 that say they want to notify the vet themselves.

Board Complaint Filed Over Financially-Limited Care Of Blocked Cat: Standards Of Care And Prognosis For Dealing With Feline Urethral Obstructions
If the owner can't do the "best" plan, but has funds for a less than optimal plan, I will do a modified plan and document the owner's refusal/inability to do the best plan even though I have told them ad nauseam why they should do it the right way.

Treating Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia In A Dog That Relapsed During The Prednisone Taper
With Azathioprine, the neutropenia is the first sign that the dog is heading toward pancytopenia. That can be irreversible if the Azathioprine isn't stopped in time, so this is one of the few drugs where *any* neutropenia means stop it immediately and don't use the drug again.

Positive Letters From Veterinarians To Their Favorite Clients
    Dear Client,

Thank you for taking the news of your old man beagle's prostate cancer in a such a dignified manner. When the time came to put him down you let him go with peace. I deal with death just fine usually - but the sight of a hardened war veteran shedding silent tears wrecked me. Thanks for letting us shed a few tears with you without us all embarrassing one another.

And then you stopped and listened in at the front desk to a young man with his new puppy. He will be a good owner I think, even if he didn't have the money for flea preventative at this appointment. You watched him quietly, then tossed some cash on the counter. Didn't say a word to him, just nodded and strolled out all casual and steady as a rock.

You sir, are a class act. And that memory is one of the many reasons I love my job.
