VNS Behind the Curtain: Generating News, Insight, and... Scrutiny?
What goes into investigating and writing the VIN News Service (VNS) stories? Who's paying attention to them and what impact are they having in the veterinary community? Join VNS reporter/editor Jennifer Fiala, BA, this Sunday night at 10 p.m EDT and take a peek behind the curtain!

This session will be all text, no audio.

Use the Rounds link in the main navigation bar to join the discussion.

If you can't attend, check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN, or next Tuesday's VIN This Week, for links to the transcript of the discussion.

The Beginning & End of Each Tail
Certain medical and surgical problems are unique to pediatric and geriatric patients. End-of life issues can be some of the most challenging for veterinarians and owners to face.

At the other end of the spectrum, the tiny body size of many neonates and the rapidly changing physiology of pediatric patients can make their problems quite daunting.

To help you, the new Pediatrics & Geriatrics Specialty Center has all of these resources and much more:

  • Guidelines
  • Associate chapters
  • Pertinent rounds
  • Articles on spay/neutering, neonatology, geriatric conditions, and other topics
  • Client handouts
  • Slide shows and videos
  • Links to message board discussions, journal abstracts, conference proceedings, and outside websites

Find the Pediatrics and Geriatrics Specialty Center through the About Page for the Peds & Geriatrics Message Board and the Specialty Centers section of the VIN Library.

VIN Survey: Share your Thoughts on Pet Medication Sales Practices
Traditionally, pharmacy income from prescription and non-prescription veterinary products has been an important revenue stream for some veterinary practices.

How has the growing availability of veterinary pharmaceuticals through online and local retailers impacted your practice, patients, and clients?

This very SHORT and IMPORTANT survey needs your input.

All individual responses will be kept confidential.

Active tension-extension splints: A novel technique for management of congenital flexural deformities affecting the distal limb in the foal
A variety of methods are described for managing distal limb flexural deformities in the foal, including intravenous oxytetracycline and splint or cast use. This case series describes a novel technique that creates an ‘active tension-extension splint’ by wiring the toe into a custom-made fibreglass splint and therefore into active extension.

Enrichment for captive tigers (Panthera tigris): Current knowledge and future directions
Environmental enrichment is a common approach for addressing stereotypic behaviour in captive animals. Like many big cats, tigers (Panthera tigris) are renowned for their stereotypic pacing, yet relatively little is known about optimal enrichment for this species.

Canine noninflammatory alopecia: a comprehensive evaluation of common and distinguishing histological characteristics
Noninflammatory alopecia is a frequent problem in dogs, and the pathogenesis is still unclear. The objective of this study was a comparative histological description of skin biopsies from dogs with different alopecic disorders and control dogs matched for coat type, season and disease duration.

Owners considered lawsuit after dog died unexpectedly: Should we send sympathy card after their other dog was euthanized elsewhere?
Don't let lawyers drive what you know is the right thing to do. If you feel bad for a client, you send a card. It doesn't mean you admit to wrongdoing in the card, but expressing sympathy can go a long way and we can't let the threat of litigation change who we are.

Determining replacement value of clinic for insurance purposes
One way of documenting the contents is to video your entire hospital and state what the major items are as you video. The more complete and realistic the list, the better negotiating position you will be in if a claim needs to be made.

Impressive radiographic artifact resembles thoracic lesion in a dog with a cough and a heart murmur
Essentially what is happening is that when you position the dog for the ventrodorsal (VD) view, the dog is straining against extending the thoracic limbs forward. This causes him to arch the back. So the "halo" around the heart is ...

The Taxidermist/Vet

He opened his own offices with a shingle on the door that read, "Dr. Jones, Veterinary Medicine and Taxidermy - Either way, you get your dog back!"
