New Graduate Survival Manual
The worlds of veterinarian and veterinary student can sometimes feel lightyears apart. The New Graduate Survival Manual can help bridge that gap by guiding new graduates and those they work with through the minefield of issues faced early in a veterinary career. You'll find helpful advice on numerous topics such as: - Choosing a first job
- Contracts
- Adjusting to life in private practice
- Basic expectations
- The culture of a veterinary practice
- Understanding emergency duty
Look for it in the Student Center and on the VIN Foundation web site.

Potassium iodide capsule treatment of feline sporotrichosis
Sporotrichosis is a mycosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii. The most affected animal is the cat; it has played an important role in the zoonotic transmission of this disease, especially in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, since 1998.
Thrombocytosis: a retrospective study of 165 dogs
Thrombocytosis has been associated with various conditions, including inflammation, neoplasia, iron deficiency, splenectomy, and drug administration. The aim of this study was to characterize diseases and conditions associated with thrombocytosis in dogs.
Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia: new aspects of an old disease
Mortality and morbidity rates can be as high as 60% and 90%, respectively, when the disease first enters a territory, invariably through carrier animals. Recent detections of CCPP in Pakistan and Tajikistan are probably the result of improved diagnosis as the disease has been suspected there for many years, while those in Thrace in 2003 and Mauritius in 2009 represent new outbreaks.

Radiograph interpretation and surgical suggestions for dog with tibial crest avulsion; radiographs from dog with Osgood-Schlatter-like disease
The way this defect is filling in is similar to an Osgood-Schlatter-like lesion. It is so named in people, but in dogs the anatomy is a little different. Also, in dogs, it is probably part of a continuum of proximal tibial/tibial tuberosity physeal fractures.
Is canine parvovirus more aggressive this year?; Benefits of enteral feeding for puppies with parvoviral enteritis
Don't forget that early enteral feeding is valuable for parvo pups.
Canine distemper: Incubation period and urine PCR for diagnosis; Possible distemper vaccine failure ina young dog with Myoclonus (video)
Unfortunately, this video does look like classic canine distemper myoclonus.
Why did cat develop complete bilateral nasal occlusion after routine ovariohysterectomy
This sounds like nasopharyngeal stenosis, which, unfortunately, can be secondary to aspiration rhinitis.

What's in the box? I come back from lunch and find a box next to my desk. My receptionist comes in, looking slightly embarassed. She says, "I started to open your box, and I probably shouldn't have, since it's personal stuff." As she speaks, she gets redder and redder. I reassure her that it was fine that she opened it, but she jumps in with, "I should have realized from the plain brown box and the fact that it was Recreational Equipment, Inc, but I didn't know, until I saw the Vibram Five Fingers, I'm so embarassed!" It took me a minute to realize that she thought my running toe shoes were sex toys.
