It's Never too Late to Join the VIN Journal Club!
Basing medical recommendations on the most current research is a hallmark of evidence-based medicine. However, many of us were never formally trained in the art and skill of critically assessing and applying the information presented in scientific papers. The VIN Journal Club meets the first Thursday of each month with a different VINner (often, but not always, a VIN Consultant, and all are welcome to volunteer) leading a discussion. All VINners are welcome to join in the discussions of papers from JAVMA or a free-access journal. Even if you don’t have access to JAVMA you can participate --- we'll arrange to get you a copy of the featured article. If you haven't done so yet, Journal Club is the perfect reason to set up your online access to JAVMA and store it in your VIN Password Vault. Doing so will make access to the full text of the Journal Club papers one click away :) Next session: Thursday, September 6, 1 p.m. EDT Join George Glanzberg, VMD, and Stijn Niessen, DVM, PhD, MRCVS, DECVIM, to discuss Conflict of Interest in Scientific Research and Publications. There won't be a particular paper to critique this week. Just come prepared to join in the discussion about how to identify bias and think critically about your reading. Can’t make the live session? Don’t worry – the transcript will be available the next day on the Journal Club page and the Recent Rounds section.

Investigation of a Microcystis aeruginosa cyanobacterial freshwater harmful algal bloom associated with acute microcystin toxicosis in a dog
Microcystin poisoning was diagnosed in a dog exposed to a Microcystis aeruginosa-dominated, freshwater, harmful algal bloom at Milford Lake, Kansas, which occurred during the summer of 2011. Lake water microcystin concentrations were determined at intervals during the summer, using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and indicated extremely high, localized microcystin concentrations of up to 126,000 ng/ml.
Plasma and pulmonary disposition of ceftiofur and its metabolites after intramuscular administration of ceftiofur crystalline free acid in weanling foals
The objectives of this study were to determine the plasma and pulmonary disposition of ceftiofur crystalline free acid (CCFA) in weanling foals and to compare the plasma pharmacokinetic profile of weanling foals to that of adult horses. A single dose of CCFA was administered intramuscularly to six weanling foals and six adult horses at a dose of 6.6 mg/kg of body weight. Concentrations of desfuroylceftiofur acetamide (DCA) were determined in the plasma of all animals, and in pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells of foals.
Investigation of a screening programme and the possible identification of biomarkers for early disseminated histiocytic sarcoma in Bernese Mountain dogs
The aim of the study was to construct a screening programme for disseminated histiocytic sarcoma (DHS) in Bernese Mountain dogs using diagnostic imaging and blood analysis and evaluate blood borne biomarkers as early disease detection biomarkers. Healthy Bernese Mountain dogs were screened on four occasions in an attempt to detect early disease. Eleven blood borne biomarkers were examined for their worth as early tumour biomarkers.

Caudal Vena Cava obstruction in a geriatric cat
This mass actually flutters as blood flow goes by it, so I don't think there's any doubt that it's real. It is most likely a thrombus.
Should we switch from accrual method to cash method of accounting, and how will this affect inventory management?
There are accrual accounting systems, and filing your taxes on an accrual basis. Just because you use an accrual accounting system does not mean you have to file taxes with the IRS with an accrual computation method. At the end of the year, your accountant can adjust your final accrual accounting numbers to a cash basis for filing taxes with a few quick calculations.

What's in the box? I come back from lunch and find a box next to my desk. My receptionist comes in, looking slightly embarassed. She says, "I started to open your box, and I probably shouldn't have, since it's personal stuff." As she speaks, she gets redder and redder. I reassure her that it was fine that she opened it, but she jumps in with, "I should have realized from the plain brown box and the fact that it was Recreational Equipment, Inc, but I didn't know, until I saw the Vibram Five Fingers, I'm so embarassed!" It took me a minute to realize that she thought my running toe shoes were sex toys.
