New Graduate Survival Manual
The worlds of veterinarian and veterinary student can sometimes feel light years apart. The New Graduate Survival Manual can help bridge that gap by guiding new graduates and their mentors through the minefield of issues faced early in a veterinary career.

You'll find helpful advice on numerous topics such as:

  • Choosing a first job
  • Contracts
  • Adjusting to life in private practice
  • Basic expectations
  • The culture of a veterinary practice
  • Understanding emergency duty

Look for it in the Student Center and the VIN Foundation library.

Saccharomyces boulardii viability and efficacy in horses with antimicrobial-induced diarrhoea
No statistically significant differences were found in days to return to normal faecal consistency; resolution of watery diarrhoea; return to normal heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature; resolution of leucopaenia; attitude improvement; appetite improvement; and survival at discharge.

Diagnosis and treatment of an insulinoma in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)
Diazoxide treatment for presumptive insulinoma was started at a dosage of 5 mg/kg, PO, every 12 hours. A blood glucose curve demonstrated persistent hypoglycemia, and the diazoxide dosage was gradually increased to 25 mg/kg, PO, every 12 hours. A second glucose curve measurement 12 days later confirmed adequate euglycemic control.

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of midazolam after intravenous and intramuscular administration in alpacas
Midazolam was well absorbed after IM administration, had a short duration of action, and induced moderate levels of sedation in alpacas.

Dog With Atypical Aggressive Episode Was Found To Have A Urinary Tract Infection
The last month or so she has just seemed a little depressed and quiet, and I was attributing that to age and new baby blues. No pollakiuria, accidents, or hematuria. Just behavioral changes.

Communication Problems With The Local Emergency Clinic: Any Advice On Dealing With This?
Consistently, the reports come back as if the vet wants to seem like he is a much smarter and better vet than I am.

Should An Abdominal Exploratory Always Be Performed On Dogs That Have Attack Wounds To The Abdomen?
I explore all wounds, but I don't necessarily advise doing a full abdominal exploratory on each and every abdominal wound. It would depend on the circumstances of the injury: gored by a bull? Yes. Bitten by another little poodle? Probably not.

Lungworm Infection Diagnosed In A Kitten With Increased Respiratory Effort And Marked Interstitial Pulmonary Pattern
With a modified Baermann technique -- a gauze swab with faeces in it, placed in warm water in a tilted kidney dish -- we managed to find lungworm larvae, even though that faecal sample had been in the refrigerator for 4 days!

      Say what?
A client just called to ask if I drew eyebrows on her dog while it was here.

      Um... no.

She didn't seem upset, just curious. As if maybe it was part of the treatment plan. When she was informed that I did not draw anything on her dog, she said she'd ask her kids if they did it. I'm not sure if I should be concerned that she suspected me of doodling on her dog over her children.
