Risk factors associated with the development of chronic kidney disease in cats evaluated at primary care veterinary hospitals
Risk factors for CKD in cats included thin body condition, prior periodontal disease or cystitis, anesthesia or documented dehydration in the preceding year, being a neutered male (vs spayed female), and living anywhere in the United States other than the northeast.

Compartment syndrome associated with expansile antebrachial tumors in two dogs
For either dog, there were no salient pathological or diagnostic imaging abnormalities. A diagnosis of compartment syndrome was confirmed on the basis of high caudal antebrachial compartmental pressure in the affected forelimb.

How Can We Decrease Client Confusion When Explaining Detailed Information?
I tell clients that I know that they might not remember what I said, so they should not feel bad if they want to call me for clarification or to hear it again. I've had many owners sound grateful when I say that.

Is It Safe To Vaccinate Bitches Or Queens Who Are Pregnant Or Nursing?
Pregnancy and mild illness are not contraindications to administering core vaccines in most shelter settings, because the risk from virulent pathogens in an unvaccinated animal would be far greater than the relatively low risk of problems posed by vaccination.

Duckling Ate Diamond Earring
My favorite way to deal with this in ducks is to fast for a good 8 hours and then anesthetize, intubate, and lay on a sloped table with head steeply down. Then...

Successful Resolution Of Fanconi Syndrome In Dog That Ate Jerky Treats
We've heard of others resolving, based on clinical signs and glycosuria. I don't think anyone else has posted a case monitored so well, with a proven time course for resolution of the aminoaciduria.

'How did I get here' moments
The iguana died. It reminded me of a house call I made to see another iguana a few winters ago.

This iguana was reportedly too big to get to the hospital and it was about zero degrees outside. I agreed to do a house call after work.

I drove out and got to the condo complex at dusk. The owner answered the door.

She was just home from work as some sort of armed police officer (court sherriff, or something) - unexpectedly in full uniform with the Batman belt and leather boots and a big gun.
