Staying Sane in the Often Insane World of Clinical Practice
You spend all day taking care of others, but what's left for you at the end of the day? How do you recharge so you can do it all again tomorrow? Why even bother? If those questions sound familiar, join Michele Gaspar, DVM, MA, DABVP, this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

*This session will feature audio. Take the readiness test before attending.

Use the Rounds link in the main navigation bar to join the discussions.

If you can't attend, check the Rounds page or Front Page of VIN, or next Tuesday's VIN This Week, for links to the transcript of the discussion.

Need help remembering when Rounds sessions are happening? Here's a list of ways to be reminded about VIN Rounds sessions.

Meet the VIN Consultants!
Over 250 of the most dedicated and talented leaders in veterinary medicine monitor and facilitate clinical discussions that help us all be better clinicians while helping individual VINners manage their cases.

Are you a specialist who loves helping (and learning from) your colleagues? Call Paul Pion at 530-757-6881 or email Paul@vin.com for more information.

Consultants aren't the only ones who contribute valuable knowledge and experience on VIN. Every member of the VIN community (yes, that includes you!) is welcome and encouraged to offer input for Message Board discussions. VIN is a family of colleagues, and we can all learn from each other.

Helping you Educate Your Clients
Help your clients be better informed pet owners with the Client Education Resources listed in the VIN Library.

Want to let your clients know how being a VIN member impacts the quality of veterinary care you provide? The VIN Client Brochure highlights VeterinaryPartner.com, where your clients can get advertising-free, independent information at no charge. VIN members can order a pack of 25 brochures for FREE in the VIN Bookstore.

Post a Medical Video on the Message Boards
Want your VIN colleagues to look at a case for you? Email your video to Videos@vin.com and the VIN multimedia team will convert it to a format your fellow VINners can easily view on the message boards.

Please remember, videos should be posted on VIN, not YouTube, because:

  • Videos on the Internet don't live forever, as a general rule.
  • VINners can't learn from your case if the video component isn't "part" of the thread.
  • Some of the VIN Consultants and Assistant Editors cannot access YouTube. (It is a blocked site at their place of employment.)

Read the FAQ for detailed instructions. Questions? Email videos@VIN.com.

Bat rabies, public health and European bat conservation
Bat NGOs throughout Europe have worked to persuade the public not to handle bats or to do so only with gloved hands and, in the case of bat workers, to receive pre-exposure immunization. They have also countered negative media coverage of bat rabies. Householders with bat roosts in their dwellings have in general been persuaded to retain their bats. Attempts have been made to persuade all European countries to establish comparable EBLV surveillance programmes.

Use of totally implantable vascular access port with mini-invasive Seldinger technique in 12 dogs undergoing chemotherapy
Vascular access ports (VAPs) are totally implantable devices designed to provide repeated access to the vascular system. Port access is performed by percutaneous needle insertion using a noncoring needle. VAPs have been placed in 12 dogs affected by different tumors and needing long lasting chemotherapy.

Ultrasound-guided dorsal approach for femoral nerve blockade in cats: an imaging study
This study was conducted to describe and validate a dorsal ultrasound-guided approach to block the femoral nerve (FN) in cats by means of anatomical and computed tomography (CT) studies. The anatomical study was carried out in four fresh feline cadavers to determine the anatomic landmarks to approach this nerve.

I Want To Own An Emergency Clinic: Buying Into Existing Practice Vs. Starting My Own Practice
Don't bank on the buy-in unless it's ironclad in writing with a stiff buy-out clause. Offers of buy-ins during the hiring phase are a dime a dozen; real opportunities that materialize as advertised are rare exotic creatures.

      When we are the patients...
When my ticker was getting rewired, the doctor would occasionally pause his fluoroscopy screen so I could watch on my screen because he knew I was interested. (Apparently they couldn't do both screens live at the same time.) They even printed me a picture of my heart with all the electrodes in it. It was pretty neat being awake for the procedure (except for the nurse anesthetist asking me about her cat).
