Cutaneous neoplastic lesions of equids in the central United States and Canada: 3,351 biopsy specimens from 3,272 equids (2000-2010)
Reports from 2 diagnostic laboratories (Colorado State University and Prairie Diagnostic Services Inc) were reviewed for frequency of specific lesions and epidemiological trends. Variables included in analyses (if known) were age, sex, breed, geographic location, date of diagnosis, location of neoplasm on the body, and presence or absence of ulceration. RESULTS: Sarcoid, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma were the 3 most common tumors diagnosed.

Routine Health Screening: Findings in apparently healthy middle-aged and old cats
Old cats (>10 years) had significantly higher SBP, heart rate, murmur frequency, thrombocyte count, urine protein:creatinine ratio and serum urea and bilirubin concentrations, and significantly lower body condition score, haematocrit, albumin and total calcium concentrations than middle-aged cats (6-10 years). The common occurrence of physical examination and laboratory abnormalities in apparently healthy old cats underlines the need for regular health checks and the development of age-dependent laboratory reference intervals.

Computed tomographic findings in dogs and cats with temporomandibular joint disorders: 58 cases (2006-2011)
Results indicated that TMJ disorders were frequently present in combination. Osteoarthritis was the most common TMJ disorder in dogs and the second most common TMJ disorder in cats. Computed tomography should be considered as a tool for the diagnosis of TMJ disorders in dogs and cats with suspected orofacial disorders and signs of pain.

Fluctuating Lyme Multiplex Titers In Asymptomatic Dog
It's commonly implied by testing companies that you are testing for Lyme "disease". But if you read the fine print, you'll find you're testing only for antibodies and/or response to the disease, NOT the disease itself.

Possible Neosporosis In A Litter Of Puppies; Transmission And Prevention Of Neospora Infections In Cattle And Dogs
Neospora is now the number one diagnosed cause of abortion we see in dairy cattle. The dog is the intermediate host and cattle are infected by eating feed (pasture, feed bunks, hay, etc.) contaminated with dog feces.

How Do You Manage Anal Sac Abscesses?
I always treated anal sac abscesses with surgical flushing, debridement, and drain placement. I see that others treat them medically. What are other VINners doing?

What's the best thing to happen to you today?
Maybe not the best thing, but definitely the most entertaining...

I do health certificates for a local nature center when they take animals into NYC for educational programs. Today's group included a giant millipede. I wrote a health certificate on a giant millipede.
