As a Matter of FAQ...
The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because some topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of results can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards.

Save time and check out the Medical FAQs before you post.

Newest additions:

Your Dog Ate What?!? Visit the Toxicology Specialty Center
Your patients have a real knack for getting into potential toxins.

Resources from VIN and beyond are compiled in the Toxicology Specialty Center to help you deal with these unwelcome surprises.

In the center, you'll find:

  • Links to useful books and manuals
  • Medical FAQs
  • Associate chapters and rounds.
  • Client handouts
  • Slide shows
  • Links to journal articles and proceedings.

There are also whole sections dedicated to poisonous plants and pertinent FDA/EPA/FARAD websites.

Look for the Toxicology Specialty Center on the About Page for the Toxicology Message Board and in the Specialty Centers section of the VIN Library.

You can Participate in Clinical Research Without Leaving Your Home or Office!

Multimodal therapy including electroacupuncture for the treatment of facial nerve paralysis in a horse
The horse was re-examined 2 weeks after the surgery; the left partial facial paralysis was still present and associated with amyotrophy of the muscles supplied by the buccal branches of the facial nerve. In accordance with the owner, the horse was hospitalised to start an electrostimulation treatment. The horse was treated every day for the first 4 days, then every 2 or 3 days during the following 3 weeks, for a total of 11 sessions. At the end of the second week of treatment, the horse was able to normally prehend the food and atrophy seemed reduced.

Thyroid scintigraphy in veterinary medicine
Thyroid scintigraphy is most commonly used to aid in the diagnosis and treatment management of feline hyperthyroidism but is also used in the evaluation of canine hypothyroidism and canine thyroid carcinoma.

PET and SPECT imaging in veterinary medicine
Although PET and SPECT technologies are in their infancy for clinical veterinary medicine, increasing access to and interest in these applications and other molecular imaging techniques has led to a greater knowledge and collective body of expertise for veterinarians worldwide.

Variability Of Avian CBC (Complete Blood Count) Results Between Different Laboratories
For the heck of it, we recently submitted blood from the same patient (collected at the same time and shipped on the same day), to three different laboratories -- just to see what kind of variation we could see...

Treating Concurrent Cardiac Failure And Renal Failure In Cats: When Are Intravenous Fluids Indicated, And At What Rate?
This is an acute case. Your job is to get it through this crisis and out the door. Once the acute crisis is managed successfully, then you treat the cat just like any other cat with heart failure. The problem is that no matter what you do, most of these cats aren't going to make it out that door.

Continued Arthritis Pain In A Dog Previously Treated For Polyarthritis
It seems that the dog is disproportionately painful compared with the amount of changes seen on the radiographs. Why does this happen?

Lyme Vaccines: Is OspC Important?
All Lyme vaccines provide the dog with protection, because of antibody produced *only* against OspA. The other Osp proteins are not relevant in preventing infection in the dog.
