VIN Mentor: Emergency Procedures Manual
The VIN Mentor manual includes videos of complete medical procedures with narration, step-by-step instructions, and accompanying materials lists to help you perform the procedures with success.

You can also print a PDF and take it with you as you perform each procedure.

At the moment, the videos are mostly procedures commonly performed in the ER, but as the collection grows it will include procedures from many disciplines (including exotic species).

To suggest a procedure or contribute your own videos, please email Tony@vin.com.

An atypical case of recurrent cellulitis/lymphangitis in a Dutch Warmblood horse treated by surgical intervention
The case reported here describes an atypical presentation of cellulitis/lymphangitis in an 8-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare. The horse was presented with a history of recurrent episodes of cellulitis/lymphangitis and the presence of fluctuating cyst-like lesions on the left hindlimb.

Cutaneous manifestations of internal diseases
One of the best-recognized cutaneous manifestations of internal disease includes the skin changes seen in endocrine diseases. Cutaneous manifestations of internal disease can also be seen with certain neoplastic processes. Metabolic disturbances in zinc, lipid metabolism, or increased amino acid catabolism can result in zinc-responsive dermatosis, cutaneous xanthomas, and superficial necrolytic dermatitis, respectively.

Malignant melanoma in 63 dogs (2001-2011): the effect of carboplatin chemotherapy on survival
A retrospective study of 63 dogs with oral, digital or cutaneous malignant melanoma treated with surgery and/or chemotherapy was undertaken. Dogs were grouped based on the anatomical site of melanoma development.

Grouping protocol in shelters
Dog population dynamics in shelters often requires the grouping of individuals, and changes to the composition of those groups. We developed a protocol to maximize the positive effects and reduce the negative effects associated with grouping dogs. Twenty-three neutered dogs that had to be grouped participated in the study.

Internet Scares Have Clients Convinced That Trifexis (Spinosad/Milbemycin Oxime) Is Toxic
My boss, who started practicing long before the internet was even invented, used to come back with "Mrs. Jones, I'm sure every person who has had cancer used toilet paper. That doesn't mean toilet paper causes cancer!"

Ideas For Explaining To Owners Why Dogs With Malocclusions Benefit Greatly By Selective Extractions
The following analogy seems to help me explain to owners why a dog with malocclusion should have incisor teeth extracted when they are causing traumatic damage. Perhaps this analogy and discussion could be useful to you as well ...

Favorite Tips For Making Large Animal Practice Easier
When you get a prolapse that won't go back in (hard, necrotic, frozen to the ground, and chicken pecked) you can amputate it using a callicrate band.

Diagnostic Recommendations For Fractious Cat With Diabetes, Fragile Skin, And Possible Hyperadrenocorticism (Photographs)
The low dose dexamethasone suppression test is the right screening test for hyperadrenocorticism in the cat. This cat will be tricky because he has fragile skin and will need to be restrained -- and because he wants to eat people.

The Tale of Sandy the Horse and the Horrible, No Good Ice-cream Cone
Before attaching the lead rope to his halter, she turned to close the gate behind her, cone in the opposite hand, and as she turned, he stole 3/4 of the ice cream cone, in one bite, before she could react.

Sandy chewed with a smug look on his face, for about half a second...

After which, this look of extreme surprise appeared on his face, he opened his mouth as wide as he could and, breathing hard, took off at a frantic gallop around the field, shaking his head, with his mouth still gaping wide open.
