Make no Bones About it...
... orthopedics requires knowledge, a 3-D mind, and the right equipment. VIN may not be able to give you a 3-D mind or a new set of bone plates, but the new Surgery-Orthopedic Center contains useful information about orthopedic diseases, procedures and equipment.

The Surgery-Orthopedic Center can be reached through the About Page for the Orthopedics Message Board folder and the Specialty Centers page in the VIN Library.

"I am a Pig, and as a Pig, I Have Always Stood out." ~ Miss Piggy
Though still popular pets, pot bellied pigs are not always popular patients. Never fear! The updated Pot Bellied Pig Manual is here to save you with practical and valuable information and tips to help veterinarians improve their knowledge, diagnostics, and therapeutic practices for these unique pets.

This publication began as a compilation of the cases of over 3000 pot bellied pigs treated by clinicians at the University of California's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) and has been updated to include information on diseases common in both pet pigs and commercial swine.

Nigropallidal encephalomalacia in horses grazing Rhaponticum repens (creeping napweed)

Failure to acknowledge high suicide risk among veterinarians
It is of concern that veterinarians not only have a higher risk of suicide but that they also have fewer support structures. The wide discrepancies between the published risk of suicide for veterinarians and their own views of their risk suggests an inadequate awareness of their own mental health vulnerability which could put them at higher risk.

Electronic collars vs. Reward based positive training for dogs; the distinction between training for pets and working or competition dogs
There are many reasons to reach for reward-based vs. punishment-based or confrontational training styles. For the sake of our clients and patients, there is a welfare consideration. Is it humane to punish in the name of training basic skills?

Kitten with respiratory signs and progressive severe dermatitis: workup suggestions; consider sebaceous gland dysplasia
This cat is a disaster and this owner needs to get out of the way of a diagnosis. The skin almost looks like sebaceous gland dysplasia.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy case in California
All forms of BSE are prion diseases, which result when a normal brain protein called PrP twists into a different shape and then converts other normal copies of the protein into the disease-causing form. Such diseases strike many different animals, including sheep, deer, elk, and humans. In atypical forms of BSE, the PrP protein probably folds into slightly different shapes compared with the ones caused by eating contaminated feed.

Treatment recommendations for post-arrest encephalopathy in a young dog
Is there any hope that this may have a good outcome?

Are you sure it doesn't apply?
Dear Cats, I don't understand this new obsession of yours - catching crickets and grasshoppers and pulling off ONE leg and leaving it to die, but I understand you are a cat and this must be a new cat thing. HOWEVER - please leave your victims OUTSIDE. I'm pretty sure that the "three legs and a spare" mantra does not apply to arthropods, and in any event, I'm not an exotics vet. Love and kisses, Your Mom
