Come Fly With Me
Do you have clients with feathered friends but secretly feel that avian surgery is for the birds? Thanks to generous contributions by VIN Consultant Avery Bennet, DVM, MS, DACVS, the VIN Avian Soft Tissue Surgery Center houses a collection of videos illustrating procedures from celiotomy to tracheotomy.

Specialized instrumentation and equipment are also covered in this great collection. Find the videos in the Avian Specialty Center and Slideshows and Movies sections of the VIN Library.

Model Employment Contract
Lawyers might love contracts, but for the average layperson they can seem scary. Whether you are a prospective employee or an employer, the Model Employment Contract provides practical contract information with an explanation of legal provisions and fully customizable sections. This is a VIN Foundation initiative.

To help get you started, VIN Attorney Raphael Moore, JD, LLM, presented a rounds that explains the model contract in simple terms. You can read the transcript or listen to the session.

Those who have used it say it helped them work through the details without creating feelings of adversity between employer and employee.

You'll find a link to the VIN Foundation Library in the Practice Management and Misc. sections of the Main library.

Hypernatremia in a Cat with Toxoplasma-Induced Panencephalitis
The Toxoplasma-induced dysfunction of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland led to diabetes insipidus, which was, in combination with insufficient water intake, the most likely cause for the hypernatremia.

Drug Therapy For Hospice-Assisted Natural Death In Cats
My first choice, given the big picture, would be methadone. It will ensure better pain relief, if any is present, and offers nice sedation.

Skin Fragility And Gait Abnormality In A Young Puppy: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Suspected
Ehlers-Danlos would fit with the cutaneous signs and other potential connective tissue abnormalities. I would not recommend this breeding again.

Using Lomotil (Diphenoxylate-Atropine) For Cough Suppression In Dogs
Some internists say they like it as much as hydrocodone, in terms of cough suppression.

Client Is Upset That Cat's Vibrissae Were Trimmed Prior To Surgery
Dr. Google says that cats' whiskers are "attached to a special part of their brain" and it can kill the cat if the whiskers are trimmed.

Delicate wording for medical records
I'm interested in what wording other vets use for describing difficult, unreasonable, or altered mentation clients in medical records. I feel I must have my guard up against lawsuits and board complaints (California) and yet if these clients ask for their records in person they are just the ones to complain/argue to alter the record to remove anything that appears negative. It's easy to write simply "declined rabies vaccine", but there are many grey areas.

To Curve or Not to Curve? When is the Question
Presenter:Margie Scherk, DVM, DABVP (Feline Practice)
June 29 - July 16, 2016

Performing and interpreting glucose curves provides the necessary information to determine best type of insulin as well as dose adjustments in a patient. However, performing curves isn't appropriate for every client. The goals of therapy are not the same for different patients and different clients. Adjunctive approaches to help clients care for their diabetic cat will be discussed.
