Updates in Feline Medicine from ACVIM Forum 2012
If you didn't attend the ACVIM Forum in New Orleans a couple weeks ago or just want a review, join Michele Gaspar, DVM, DABVP, this Sunday night at 10 p.m EDT to learn about the latest feline research findings and clinical techniques.

* This session will use audio. Are you ready? Take the Readiness Test.

Use the Rounds link in the main navigation bar to join the discussions.

If you can't attend, check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN, or next Tuesday's VIN This Week, for links to the transcript of the discussion.

Hello? Is This Thing On? Why Haven't I Gotten a Response to my Message Board Post yet?
The VIN consultants make every effort to make sure you have a response within 48 hours of posting, but sometimes both manual and automatic systems for monitoring go awry.

There is a system in place which monitors and tracks the age of threads needing a response. Posting a reply to your own unanswered discussion to refresh the thread is counterproductive, as this will make a thread look "newer" to the system than it actually is.

If it's been more than 48 hours since you started your discussion, please email feedback@vin.com to let us know.

If you have any questions contact membership services or email to feedback@vin.com.

Cardiac Auscultation and Phonocardiography
Though one of the most widely used diagnostic techniques in veterinary medicine, cardiac auscultation can be hard to “perfect” without help. No more! The online version of Cardiac Auscultation and Phonocardiography makes it easy. And on VIN, it's FREE.

The text and library of accompanying sound recordings will aid your interpretation of normal and abnormal heart sounds and PCGs and may help with your everyday workup of cardiac cases. Look for the sound-players located throughout the text.

Browse chapters using the Table of Contents or Search by topic.

Want a version that's available offline? The book with CD are available from the VIN Bookstore. (remember to login so you get your VIN Member discount).

Relationship of biosecurity practices with the use of antibiotics for the treatment of infectious disease on U.S. equine operations
Use of biosecurity practices is described for operations by risk level, based on reported exposure of resident horses to outside horses during the previous 12 months. In addition, the association between use of various biosecurity practices and use of antibiotics to treat infectious disease in both adult equids and foals is reported.

A case of an apparent infestation by Proisotoma spp. springtails (Collembola: Isotomidae) in a cat
The organisms, found by skin scrapings, were identified as Proisotoma spp. (Collembola: Isotomidae).

Permanent contraception of dogs induced with intratesticular injection of a Zinc Gluconate-based solution
Fifteen pubertal mongrel dogs (8 mo to 4 y old) were assigned to two groups; control dogs (n = 5) received a single injection of an isotonic saline solution into each testis, whereas treated dogs (n = 10), were given Testoblock, a proprietary zinc-gluconate (13.1 mg zinc/ml) solution in a physiological vehicle.

Dentigerous cyst in a dog with an unerupted tooth; discussing dental radiography in puppies prone to dental disease
I am not sure what the real statistics are, but the diagnostic reward of survey radiographs is very high.

Fractious dog broke teeth while hospitalized against my advice: do I have financial responsibility for repairing teeth?
I would suggest that people in similar situations take picture documentation of the damage.

Should I pay myself for doing the planning stages of my start-up practice? How do I pay bills if I can't take a salary right away?
I may just be naive, but how in the world do people start up a practice and not take a salary for a year? How exactly do you pay the bills?

Differentials for apparently healthy older kitten that has been blue since six weeks of age, with deep navy blue to violet blood seen at neuter
Normally, people have less than about 1 percent of methemoglobin. When those levels rise to greater than 20 percent, heart abnormalities and seizures and even death can occur. But at levels of between 10 and 20 percent, a person can develop blue skin without any other symptoms.

Is that like elf mutilation?
Elf-induced alopecia is actually a misnomer. It is really Pixies - they taunt the cats by pulling hair until they are crazy (Pixilated). I expect that not everyone can tell elves and pixies apart from a distance.
