If your flamingo knowledge is limited to the plastic ones in your front yard, this discussion is for you.

This session will be text only, no audio.

If you can't attend, check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN, or next Tuesday's VIN This Week, for links to the transcript of the discussion.

NEW! VIN Formulary for Exotic Animals
The Formulary for Exotic Animals puts information on drugs, doses, and indications for your exotic species patients at your fingertips.

Thanks to Ned Gentz, MS, DVM, DACZM, zoo/wildlife veterinarian and VIN consultant, Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, DVM, PhD, DABT, DABVT, veterinary toxicologist and VIN consultant, and the VIN exotic animal species consultants and editors for working so hard to bring this new resource to the VIN community!

Find it in the Books and Drug Resources sections of the VIN Library and in the Small Mammals, Avian, and Clinical Pharmacology Specialty Centers.

Megaesophagus Information Center
The new Megaesophagus Project brings together much of the existing VIN content about this condition.

Kathy Morris-Stilwell, DVM, and other VINners donated videos and information and provided great examples from message board discussions.

The Feeding Tips section includes video, text, and photos of "Bailey Chair" construction, a case history of the patient for whom the chair was named, and fluid administration suggestions.

The Image Collection has megaesophagus radiographs, contrast studies, and movies provided by Dr. Bill Blevins, MS, DVM, DACVR, and other VINners.

You'll also find additional reading such as Associate articles, client information handouts, contrast study guidelines from the 2011 ABVP Conference, and nebulizer use, as well as links to megaesophagus research studies.

Topical imiquimod in the treatment of two cutaneous melanocytomas in a dog
To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of the use of imiquimod to treat canine melanocytomas, and the first description of post-treatment histopathology and immunohistochemistry after imiquimod use in companion animals.

Effects of hot-iron disbudding, using regional anaesthesia with and without carprofen, on cortisol and behaviour of calves
The objective of this study was to assess cortisol and behaviour changes in calves hot-iron disbudded after different analgesic protocols. We assessed the response of 27 calves at 1, 3, 6 and 24h after disbudding with regional anaesthesia (DA), regional anaesthesia plus carprofen (DAC), disbudded only (D) or sham-disbudded (ND).

Cruciate ligament rupture in a chondrodysplastic Labrador retriever
My goodness, it's difficult to know what to advise. I do think the cruciate is a problem in the stifle shown to us, but it's hard to know how much we can improve him and what other limb problems might develop, especially in the front.

Housecall veterinarian bitten by a dog in the owner's home
So very sorry about what happened to you. Here's the legal spin ...

Importance of treatment in a dog with unerupted tooth and large dentigerous cyst
I found another dentigerous cyst! This one I definitely felt comfortable tackling myself. Today was more of a "love" dentistry day.

Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) licenses and controlled drug transportation for ambulatory practices
Yesterday I received an e-mail from the Sacramento office of the DEA. The demands may have some destructive implications for large animal practice as it's done in this country. Has anyone else received anything similar?

Why did you come in today?
I walk up front to put a chart on the receptionist's desk. There's a super cute Golden puppy and owner in the lobby. I squeal over the puppy and give him belly rubs and get a kiss. I stand back up and begin to walk back to the treatment room. The receptionist is coming out of the treatment room and says to the puppy's owner, "I've got your medications right here, metronidazole and Panacur." As Homer Simpson would say, "D'oh!" Was I just kissing Giardia or Toxocara or both?
