NEW TEXTBOOK on VIN
- Basic Veterinary Immunology

Basic Veterinary Immunology offers a solid background in the essentials of immunology within the context of veterinary medicine.

Produced by University Press of Colorado in partnership with VIN, this text was designed as a resource for teaching veterinary immunology and refreshing the knowledge of practicing colleagues.

You'll find it in Books & Associate and the Infectious Diseases & Immunology Specialty Center in the VIN Library.

I am a horrible person
"Today, I was discharging a Boston terrier from whose jejunum I had removed a piece of Kong on Tuesday. While reviewing all the home care instructions with his owner, a teeny tiny pinhead-sized spider started rappelling down from the ceiling and landed on her back - and I didn't tell her! I am truly a horrible person..."

How does severe brachycephaly affect dog's lives? Results of a structured preoperative owner questionnaire
Questionnaire responses revealed that in addition to the well-known respiratory signs, brachycephalic dogs experienced severe exercise intolerance and prolonged recovery time after physical exercise (88%), significant heat sensitivity (more severe signs at temperatures above 19°C; 50%), and a variety of sleep problems (56%).

Successful treatment of a horse with presumed parasitic encephalitis
Based on pronounced eosinophilic inflammation detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and diagnostic imaging findings indicating a space-occupying lesion within the brain, a presumptive diagnosis of aberrant parasitic migration causing parasitic encephalitis was made.

A technique for examining the external ear canal in standing sedated horses
Abnormalities like osteoma, granuloma, hemorrhagic or erythematous areas, and narrowing of the osseous part of the external ear canal due to stenosis (exostosis) were seen in 10 of 23 horses. The tympanic membrane was visualized in 20 of 23 horses. Local blockage of the great and internal auricular nerves was found to be a reliable method for equine ear anesthesia.

Fluke Ova Found On The Fecal Flotation Of A Green Heron: Are They Pathogenic?
I took one of the frozen smelt that we were feeding to the birds, thawed it, and did a squash prep on a section of intestine. Sure enough, it bore large numbers of the same ova that we were seeing in the birds' fecals. So apparently they are ova of a parasite of the smelt that were 'just passing through'.

Cat Ran And Hid After Owner Administered Atropine Ophthalmic Medication: Is It Irritating To Cats?
Atropine drops taste terrible, and I do not give the ophthalmic solution to cats. The ointment is far less likely to cause salivation.

Can Acetylcysteine Solution Labelled For Inhalation Use Be Given By Injection?
We used the "inhalation only" Mucomyst intravenously for years before Acetadote came on the market. It's made to the same standards as the injectable products -- it just lacks label approval.
