New Graduate Survival Manual
The worlds of veterinarians and veterinary students can sometimes feel light years apart. The New Graduate Survival Manual can help bridge that gap by guiding new graduates and those they work with through the minefield of issues faced early in a veterinary career.

You'll find helpful advice on numerous topics such as:

  • Choosing a first job
  • Contracts
  • Adjusting to life in private practice
  • Basic expectations
  • The culture of a veterinary practice
  • Understanding emergency duty

Don't forget to stop by the VIN Student Center where you'll find resources like Anatomy of an employment contract, Career Development Resources by Dr. Boss, the AVMA Veterinary Career Center (new job postings every day!) and articles on finding Intern/Resident positions.

Thanks to the continuous efforts of the VIN community, the Student Center has grown into a resource to serve all VINners.

Your Recalculating Days are Over!
Save calculations you've performed using the VIN suite of calculators and attach them to patient records for future reference using the new MyCalculations tool.

You'll find MyCalculations located under the 'Stuff' menu in your MyVIN and in the VIN Library.

Clinical evaluation of a single dose of immune plasma for treatment of canine parvovirus infection
Dogs were assigned to treatment groups on the basis of randomization tables and were administered a single IV dose of CPV-immune plasma (treatment group) or an equivalent volume of saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (placebo group) within 18 hours after admission to the hospital. Treatment and outcome variables evaluated included neutrophil, monocyte, and CPV counts; number of days of hospitalization; changes in body weight; and cost of treatment.

Evaluation of conventional PCR for detection of Strongylus vulgaris on horse farms
Recently, molecular tools have been developed to detect S. vulgaris in faecal samples. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of a conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with the traditional larval culture and furthermore test the performance of pooled versus individual PCR for farm screening purposes. Faecal samples were obtained from 331 horses on 18 different farms.

Esophageal stricture caused by doxycycline in cats
At the Montreal ACVIM, there were two researchers talking about esophageal strictures in cats and how they were more common than previously thought. Always give water after a pill and don't give doxycycline pills to cats.

Dog with unilateral nasal obstruction and unilateral keratoconjunctivitis sicca
I remember speaking to my veterinary neurologist why we don't get a clear picture on these cases. She went on to explain to me how small this area is and how hard it was to image.

Typhlectomy for removal of large leiomyosarcoma in dog
I had a crazy surgery today that I am excited about and wanted to share.

Possible etiologies and prognosis for dog with chronic cough due to restrictive pleuritis (radiographs)
This is generally the result of a chronic inflammatory condition. As fibrinous tissue organizes into fibrous tissue, and the fibrous tissue organizes and contracts, it causes the lung lobes to lose the ability to expand.
