VSPN Notebook
Originally published in 2002, the VSPN Notebook is available online and in binder format. If you haven't looked through this amazing resource, do it today.

NOT just for veterinary support staff.
You and your staff can print and customize the VSPN Notebook or you can purchase a hard copy in the VIN Bookstore (you'll have to be logged in to your VIN or VSPN account to search for it).

VIN members will find it in the books section of the VIN Library. VSPN members should look for the banner on the VSPN front page or in the VSPN Library.

You and your staff can also participate in the evolution of the Notebook by providing feedback on what you would like to see included, corrected, or updated.

Just be Yourself!
If you work in a multi-doctor practice, access and post under your own name so you can enjoy your own personalized settings and MyStuff.

Each VIN page has a Log Out button near the top right. Logging out will also keep you and your colleagues from accidentally impersonating each other.

If you've forgotten your VIN login check out the list of frequently asked questions about VIN login issues created by the VIN Membership team.

Did you know that colleagues working in the same practice qualify for group membership rates? If more than one member of your practice is using a single VIN login, you and your colleagues should each have your own login and be billed as a group membership.

This helpful FAQ will explain how group memberships work. If you still have questions contact membership services at vingram@vin.com, or call membership services at 1-800-700-4636 (toll free) or 1-530-756-4881 (local).

Store YOUR NOTES in your MyStuff!
--- NOW ON WWW.VIN.COM TOO! ---

Comparison of behavioral effects of morphine and fentanyl in dogs and cats
Behavioral effects induced by intravenous administration of morphine at 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, and 2.4 µg/kg and fentanyl at 5, 10, 20, and 40 µg/kg were evaluated in dogs and cats. In dogs, fentanyl and morphine depressed activity and level of consciousness in a dose- dependent manner. In cats, higher doses of fentanyl stimulated activity temporarily, but excitement, so-called "opioid mania," was not observed. Morphine induced distinctive behavioral changes characterized by sitting with fixed staring, and "opioid mania" was not observed in cats.

Use of reagent test strips for diagnosis of endometritis in dairy cows
The use of leukocyte esterase (LE), protein, and pH tests were evaluated on widely available urinary test strips (Multistix 10 SG; Bayer Corporation, Elkart, IN, USA) on uterine lavage samples as a potential cow-side test for the diagnosis of cytologic endometritis.

Prevalence of Lawsonia intracellularis, Salmonella spp. and Eimeria spp. in healthy and diarrheic pet rabbits
A total of 170 fresh fecal samples (healthy; n=137, diarrheic; n=33) were collected from pet rabbits. By using PCR and formol-ether concentration method, a total 13/137 healthy rabbit feces were positive for L. intracellularis, 6/137 for Salmonella, and 13/137 for Eimeria. On the other hand, a total 17/33 diarrheic rabbit fecal samples were positive for L. intracellularis, 10/33 for Salmonella, and 21/33 for Eimeria.

Horse developed myositis after intramuscular banamine injection
If we equine vets know that it shouldn't be given IM, why does it continue to be *labeled* IM?

Why does a dog that has vena cava syndrome due to heartworm disease have negative antigen tests?
There is a theoretical explanation for your finding. It's called the prozone effect.

Big Bang Theory: theory vs practice
I sing "Soft Kitty" to my kitty patients all the time. The best one was when I was trying to get an aggressive cat out of his cage and into his cardboard carrier, and everything was going fine until I tried to close the box. I was quietly singing the song when the cat suddenly exploded out of the top of the carrier, flew around the room and landed on a utility shelf. Everything had been going so well, I was surprised at the outburst and the song ended in "little ball of HOLY S*#@!!!" It took two doctors, a tech, a net and nearly ten minutes to get that little ball of holy s*#@ back in the box. Maybe I'll save the song for sick kitties.
