New Practice Management Center
Practice management though not everyone's favorite topic can be rewarding. If you sometimes feel like you are floating alone in a choppy sea of personnel and human resources issues, let the new Practice Management Center be your lifeboat!

Pertinent information on many subjects will help you navigate the rough waters of employment law, finances & economics, insurance, policies & procedures, standards & regulations, and much more!

In addition to multi-media resources like books, manuals, and slide shows, you'll find:

  • Client Handouts
  • Safety & OSHA Compliance information
  • Links to VIN Rounds on practice management topics
  • Newsletters & Forms
  • Links to external websites

You'll find the Practice Management Center through the Specialty Centers section of the VIN Library and the About Page for the Practice Management Message Board.

Hello? Is This Thing On? Why haven't I Gotten a Response to my Message Board Post yet?
The VIN consultants make every effort to make sure you have a response within 48 hours of posting, but sometimes both manual and automatic systems for monitoring go awry.

There is a system in place which monitors and tracks the age of threads needing a response. Posting a reply to your own unanswered discussion to refresh the thread is counterproductive, as this will make a thread look "newer" to the system than it actually is.

If it's been more than 48 hours since you started your discussion, please email feedback@vin.com to let us know.

If you have any questions contact membership services or email to feedback@vin.com.

Feline demodicosis: A consideration in the itchy or overgrooming cat
In cats, three species of demodex mites have been identified as causes of demodicosis, which may manifest as pruritus, miliary dermatitis and/or self-induced alopecia. The condition has been recognized in various countries but does seem to show regional preferences. Clinical challenges Diagnosis of feline demodicosis can be a challenge as mites are not always readily found within scrapings of the skin examined microscopically. One or more species of demodex mite may be involved in an infestation. Furthermore, the condition can be difficult to treat effectively.

Toxicokinetics and pathology of plant-associated acute selenium toxicosis in steers
Sixteen of approximately 500 yearling steers died of acute selenium (Se) toxicosis after grazing on a Se-contaminated range for only a few days. Field studies and chemical analyses identified the predominant toxic plant as western aster (Symphyotrichum ascendens, previously Aster ascendens), which contained over 4,000 ppm Se (dry weight). Several dead animals that were necropsied had acute severe myocardial necrosis characterized by edema and myocyte swelling, with hypereosinophilia, clumping, and coagulation of myocardial proteins.

Placebo-controlled trial of amantadine for severe traumatic brain injury
Amantadine hydrochloride is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness after traumatic brain injury. Preliminary studies have suggested that amantadine may promote functional recovery.

How useful is intravenous fluid diuresis in treating non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug toxicosis? (journal references)
I think you have to look at the difference between "forced diuresis" and maintaining hydration and perfusion. If the patient feels ill or is vomiting or adipsic, then dehydration and poor perfusion can ensue, and this can adversely affect the kidneys. Fluids prevent this and keep the kidneys perfused and happy.

Physical and chemical restraint for tusk trimming in pot-bellied pigs
I have had some obnoxious clients pin a pig with their couch and sit on it while I crawled back of the couch and trimmed its feet. I had ear protection, but they did not.

Associate veterinarian that has an absentee owner is overworked and stressed
What you should do is tell the management what your boundaries are. Right now, you have no boundaries and are floating (or sinking) with the tides.

Big Bang Theory: theory vs practice
I sing "Soft Kitty" to my kitty patients all the time. The best one was when I was trying to get an aggressive cat out of his cage and into his cardboard carrier, and everything was going fine until I tried to close the box. I was quietly singing the song when the cat suddenly exploded out of the top of the carrier, flew around the room and landed on a utility shelf. Everything had been going so well, I was surprised at the outburst and the song ended in "little ball of HOLY S*#@!!!" It took two doctors, a tech, a net and nearly ten minutes to get that little ball of holy s*#@ back in the box. Maybe I'll save the song for sick kitties.
