NEWS THAT'S FIT TO CLICK and discuss
News reported for YOU...

Be a VIN Newshound:
VNS is here to give YOU a voice and report news that is important to YOU. Got an idea for a story? Have a story that needs covering? Post it on the boards or email News@vin.com .

VIN News Service Needs Your Feedback

Share News with nonVINners -- The VIN News Service (without access to the community discussions) is now publicly available at news.vin.com. Check it out and share it.

Posting on the Message Boards:
Know Your Folders!

One way to get faster responses to your posts is to post in the most specific folder. For example, one of the busiest folders on VIN is Internal Medicine.

If you have a problem diabetic, try posting in the Endocrinology folder. If you have a painful Dachshund, post in the Neurology folder.

Posting in the most specific folder directs your question to the VIN Consultant/Editors, and Associate Editors most dedicated to your particular concern.

And remember, you don't have to have your name on a folder's About Page to jump in and share your experience. VIN welcomes the viewpoints of all colleagues, so feel free to give the help you'd like to get!

It's ACVIM/CVMA Week!
Many VIN Consultants will be attending the ACVIM Forum and CVMA Convention next week. Please be patient if responses are a bit slower than usual.

We hope to see a lot of VINners at the VIN Member breakfast!

Date: Saturday, June 6
Time: 6:30 a.m. - 7:50 a.m.
Place: Hyatt Regency Montreal: Jeanne Mance Room

If you haven't RSVP'd and would like to attend, please take a moment to respond to the survey.

Dealing with those hypothermic calves
We had a neonatal (about 7 hours old) calf come in a few days ago. Temp. not reading on glass thermometer; responsive but dumb and no suck reflex; not dehydrated; had not had colostrum to our knowledge. Wondering what the standard protocol to treat a calf like this would be.

Do you offer medical insurance to your employees?
I used Blue Cross for my employees. There are a variety of plans, including a health savings account with lower premiums. A conversation with your accountant might be helpful here to determine if that makes sense. I recently changed to such an account. I paid like 60% and they paid 20 percent per paycheck as a deduction. Health insurance is a good thing, and it is good for employee retention. And in my opinion necessary for full time employees

Controlled substance reporting: How to do a controlled substance inventory
How is the best way to make sure about the amounts in your vials of injectable meds? What is the "real" amount lost each time you pull up drugs? Does the DEA take this into account?

Vaccine clinics are crowding our schedule: should we drop them and focus on higher paying activities?
Hemorrhaging money. Gushers. Spraying the walls. Nicking the femoral artery. Bleeding so hard you can hear it. You are dramatically under-staffed. You are losing so many people by making them wait a month for an exam.
