Keel fracture assessment of laying hens by palpation: inter-observer reliability and accuracy
Accuracy was 84.8 per cent for the first 50 hens, and 99.5 per cent for the last 50 hens, respectively, indicating that there was increased accuracy and agreement as the assessors became more experienced at palpation. The level of agreement, and the high level of accuracy, would make this technique an acceptable measure of keel fracture prevalence in a welfare audit.

Gastrointestinal parasitic burdens in UK tortoises: a survey of tortoise owners and potential risk factors
Forty-nine per cent were positive for one or more parasites. Of the positive samples, 67 per cent were positive for oxyurids, 28 per cent were positive for ascarids, and 28 per cent were positive for protozoa (Balantidium, Nyctotherus, or flagellates). Only 1/113 (0.8 per cent) samples was positive for Cryptosporidium.

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia in the cat: 18 cases (2000-2010)
A multi-institutional retrospective study of 18 cats diagnosed with CLL between 2000 and 2010 was performed. Results of this study suggest that CLL affects older-aged cats and responds favourably to treatment with oral chlorambucil and prednisolone.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation On Patients Who Are Dead On Arrival
I have had a run of dead-on-arrivals in the past few days -- three cases, in fact. I know resuscitation can be case dependent, but I'm wondering if there is a sort of guideline for when to not try to resuscitate/when to try to resuscitate.

Sometimes clients are looking for guidance. Sometimes they're looking for absolution.

Options For Dog With Mast Cell Tumor In Lumbar Region And In Iliac Lymph Nodes
It is possible to see primary mast cell tumors of the lymph nodes, but it is rare. Try to look for disease elsewhere.

Ideas For Dealing With A Fractious Cat Traveling On An Airplane
Here's the solution to the TSA carrier problem. Get a mesh laundry bag with a zipper. At home, place the cat in the mesh bag and place the mesh bag in the carrier. At the security checkpoint, open the carrier...

How to Respond to Money Issues
"I want to tell them they got the services they paid for and that does not entitle them to free services. I want to ask them if, after going to their favorite restaurant or grocery store few times, they ask for a break. None of these thoughts seems constructive so I just tried to smile and nod."

Being Comfortable as Just a Stay-at-Home mom
Just because you are not working right now, does not mean you are not a veterinarian. That is part (not all) of your identity and will always be with you. I know of veterinarians who have taken time off and then shadowed at general practices, veterinary schools or speciality hospitals to get up to date. It can be done. You gave birth to a miracle. This is small potatoes.
