New Clinical Study: Seeking a Reaction
Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office?

New Study:

  • Certifect-associated Pemphigus Foliaceus-like Reactions
Researchers recently reported autoimmune pemphigus foliaceus (PF) in dogs in response to a topical amitraz-metaflumizone flea and tick control product (Promeris Duo, Pfizer). Dr. Thierry Olivry of the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking cases of suspected autoimmune reactions occuring at the site of another concentrated amitraz-containing product (Certifect, Merial).

Check the clinical trials page to see if any of the ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients.

If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.

Effects of one-week versus one-day preoperative treatment with topical 1% prednisolone acetate in dogs undergoing phacoemulsification
In dogs that underwent cataract surgery via phacoemulsification, a full week of topical prednisolone acetate treatment prior to surgery did not decrease postoperative inflammation, compared with commencement of topical prednisolone acetate treatment the evening prior to surgery, and was associated with a greater incidence of postoperative ocular hypertension.

Owner has refused to have humeral fracture fixed on cat due to financial constraints: is falsifying an insurance claim the answer?
You considered the insurance fraud, because you are human. You said no, because you are ethical.

Are sterile gloves, caps, gowns, and intravenous catheters needed for cat castrations?
For routine cat castrations, sterile gloves are ideal; however, single-use examination gloves are permissible for this procedure, when incisions are left open to heal by second intention.

Should a client be charged for treatment for a vaccine reaction?
Am I wrong for being upset that he charged me to treat my horse's vaccine reaction? I have never charged a client for a followup vaccine emergency, and I've been in practice for 30 years.

But that's not what I meant
After a series of late night emergency calls, I had a few bloopers in my notes. I was writing up the file for a cat with pyrethrin toxicity in the wee hours and wrote: "Boots will rest eternally if placed there, but prefers lateral recumbency." I blame spell check for autocorrecting "sternal."
