“For it is in giving that we receive" ...St. Francis of Assisi
It takes a special breed of veterinarian to devote their career to caring for animals in shelters and other protective services. Whether you’re a shelter vet or you're simply asked to examine a rescue or shelter animals on occasion, the new Shelter Medicine Center has resources that will come to your rescue. Find information on animal care and husbandry, recognition and treatment of diseases and management/personnel issues. Legal and regulatory issues, spay/neuter programs, nonprofit organizations and many other topics are also addressed. The Shelter Medicine Center can be reached through the Specialty Centers section of the VIN Library and the About Page of the Shelter Medicine message board.

Trichinella diagnostics and control: Mandatory and best practices for ensuring food safety
This review article describes the biology and epidemiology of Trichinella, and describes recommended test methods as well as modified and optimized procedures that are used in meat inspection.
Correlation of plasma insulin concentration with laminitis score in a field study of equine cushing's disease and equine metabolic syndrome
Plasma or serum insulin concentrations are able to provide important information to the practitioner regarding prediction of laminitis in susceptible horses.
A neurologic perspective of equine stereotypy
Equine stereotypy appears to be an inherent condition of the domestic horse; paleontologic evidence suggests that horses have been crib-biting since their domestication in the late Paleolithic (15-30,000 years ago), and these behaviors have been discussed for nearly 400 years (the first written record appeared in 1609).

Veterinarians and the red flags rule
I don't really care how "easy" the AVMA has made it, I'm a solo practitioner, and I don't have time for this kind of crap. We try to protect what we have already. The written plan, etc, is a colossal waste of time. My biggest concern, that I cannot get a straight answer from anyone on, is how long I must keep "my" copy of a credit card sales slip before I can destroy it. I've been told anywhere from 5 years to 30 days. These slips laying around are the single biggest threat to anyone, with the CC numbers and signatures on them. The new systems don't print the whole number, but I still have slips from the old system. Can I please burn them now? *Related VNS article
Understanding sensitivity and specificity
I think there is also a lot of confusion between limits of detection and the sensitivity of various assays (particularly PCR). They are not the same when you apply them to testing populations for disease, infectious agents etc.
Should technicians be pushing wellness panels and prescription diets prior to examination by veterinarian?
The practice owner has engaged a consultant to improve the practice. The technicians are now required to sell both prescription diets and wellness panels even before I enter the exam room.
Spontaneous craniodorsal hip luxation in a dog
Has anyone seen a spontaneous luxation of a pretty normal looking hip? On a search, I read about one happening after a splayed leg incident, but that was a ventral luxation.

Get More From VIN! Search Tip: Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search: - Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search. - General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful. For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.
Funny Bones Talking to kids about vet med "But the real hit was when I told them that the puppy who ate the bottle cap was very unhappy when he came in, but was bouncing off the walls by the time he left. Apparently that is hilarious."
