  • Anemia
  • Polycythemia

Build Your Own Deck of Flashcards
Whether you're still in school or have joined the ranks of "perpetual student", VIN Flashcards will help you brush up on your fundamentals.

Hundreds of flashcards are organized by medical topic or organ system. You can build and save your own custom decks of cards, then test yourself with the question or answer side of your cards. Want more information? Each card has a reference so you can get the full story.

***Special thanks go to VINner Rachel Blackmer (Tufts 1991) for kick-starting and contributing a huge number of her flashcards to this effort. Now it's your turn -- let us know if you have created cards you'd like to share or have ideas you'd like to see developed!

Interactive Survey Results Viewer
Participating in surveys is a great way to help your VIN community, but do you ever wonder what your colleagues have to say?

The VIN Survey Viewer on Beta.vin.com lets you view and evaluate survey results in ways not provided in the write-up done by the VIN survey team.

The Survey Viewer allows you to:

  • Access ONLY surveys you have taken.
  • See results in textual or graphical views.
  • Remind you of your own answer with one click.

Let us know what you think!

Keep an eye on this section of VIN This Week to learn about the latest toys on Beta.vin.com.

Life-threatening respiratory pasteurellosis associated with palliative pet care
Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic Gram-negative cocco-bacillus often associated with soft tissue infections due to dog and cat bites. Here we report 3 patients who developed life-threatening P. multocida respiratory tract infections after providing palliative care to their dying pets.

Canine immune-mediated polyarthritis: part 2: diagnosis and treatment
Canine immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA) is a diagnosis of exclusion based predominantly on clinical signs, characteristic joint fluid analysis, and elimination of potential joint infection. Ultimately, an appropriate and sustained response to immunosuppressive therapy may become the final diagnostic criterion used.

Thymomas in rabbits: clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment
Mediastinal masses in rabbits appear to be more common than previously believed and consist primarily of thymomas rather than thymic lymphomas. Cytology of samples collected by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration is an accurate diagnostic tool for the identification of thymomas in rabbits. Due to a high rate of perioperative mortality, intensive perioperative care and the provision of a low-stress environment are recommended for a successful thoracotomy.

Lameness in a dog taking palladia (Toceranib)
I've had this happen in two cases over the last ten years, so it is rare but possible.

Anecdotal use of topical mixture (dimethyl sulfoxide [DMSO], lidocaine, and morphine) for dogs with arthritis
Every night, I thank Lester for coming up with this concoction. I am having horrible pain from herniated disc surgery, and this mixture works wonders.

Dealing with spouses as employers; should part-time veterinarians contact clients with non-emergency laboratory results on their days off?
Practice owners do dumb things to their businesses in order to keep the peace at home, or otherwise appease their partners -- decisions they would likely never make if it were strictly business at the workplace.

But that's not what I meant
After a series of late night emergency calls, I had a few bloopers in my notes. I was writing up the file for a cat with pyrethrin toxicity in the wee hours and wrote: "Boots will rest eternally if placed there, but prefers lateral recumbency." I blame spell check for autocorrecting "sternal."
