Nursing Management of the Septic Patient
Join David Liss, BA, RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM), CVPM, Monday at 9 p.m. ET to discuss the nursing approach to the septic patient, including examination and nursing assessment, and identifying key nursing areas for intervention. We'll also cover sepsis "bundles" and the veterinary team's highly important role in handling a patient with sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock.
*This session will feature audio. Take the readiness test before attending.

If you can't attend, check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN, or next Tuesday's VIN This Week, for links to the transcript of the discussion.

Educating Your Clients
Help your clients be better informed pet owners with the Client Education Resources listed in the VIN Library. Find even more free, independent information that you can trust at VeterinaryPartner.com and VetzInsight.

The VIN Client Brochure was created as an easy way to explain to clients how being a VIN member impacts the quality of veterinary care that you provide. It also highlights the VIN client handout website, VeterinaryPartner.com, where your clients can learn more about health issues concerning their pets. VIN members can order a pack of 25 brochures for FREE in the VIN Bookstore.

Why Haven't I Gotten a Response to my Message Board Post yet?
The VIN consultants, associate editors, and reps make every effort to ensure you have a response within 48 hours (usually much sooner) of posting, but sometimes things don't go as planned.

To keep track of the huge number of posts per day, the wonderful VIN Representative Team, with the help of an automated system, monitors and tracks the age of threads needing a response. Posting to your own unanswered discussion to "refresh it" won't change the priority of your post.

Remember, VIN is colleagues helping colleagues, and the more input from all VINners, the better for all of us. So don't be shy about chiming in to help others, and don't be put off if your help comes from a fellow VINner or someone without a bunch of letters after their name.

If it's been more than 48 hours since you started your discussion, please email feedback@vin.com to let us know.

If you have any questions contact membership services or email to feedback@vin.com.

VIN Community Quick Polls
The first of these new one-question polls (some serious, some not so serious) launched on Monday, April 21. Over 1,400 VINners cast their votes for their preferred euthanasia solution for dogs and cats.

Voice your opinion! You'll find the Quick Poll on the left side of the front page under the Daily Pearl. This week's question is "How do you most commonly enter an exam room?"

Read the discussion to see how the idea came about and how you can contribute ideas for new polls.

Clinical approach to advanced renal function testing in dogs and cats
Advanced renal function tests, including glomerular filtration rate testing, determining fractional excretion of electrolytes, and assay of urine biomarkers, may allow earlier detection of reduced renal function mass, differentiation of renal from non-renal causes of azotemia, and assist with localization of damage.

Diagnosis of small intestinal disorders in dogs and cats
Laboratory tests are an important part of the workup of small intestinal diseases in dogs and cats. This article details the newest available data on tests to aid this diagnostic process.

Using cardiac biomarkers in veterinary practice
Increasingly, studies indicate that cardiac biomarker testing can help assess the risk of morbidity and mortality in animals with heart disease.

Work-In/Walk-In Appointments: Suggestions On Scheduling And Staff Training
Some of this is training your clients/staff. Some of this is fixing your appointment calendar so things run smoother. At my clinic...

Technician With Performance And Attitude Problems: Can I Discuss My Suspicions Of Mental Health Issues?
In a job performance/review setting you can, and should, address the behavioral issues you are witnessing, and examine whether these behaviors can be remedied or not. You can give the employee the opportunity to express his concerns, and you can see whether you are able to accommodate those concerns or behavioral issues.

Symptomatic Stage 3 Heartworm Dog: Should I Start Immiticide (Melarsomine) Immediately, Or Treat With Prednisone And Minocycline First?
Killing the worms will initially make things worse, so you would like to have him in better shape before treating. Something like 80% of these dogs live to tell the tale.

Risk Evaluation And Mitigation Strategy (REMS) For Extended Release Opioids: Is Training Required For Veterinarians?
Do REMS-compliant training programs apply to veterinarians? I received a letter (page 26 on the link) from the ER/LA Opioid Analgesic Companies (I assume companies who make extended-release/long acting opioids) which hinted at mandatory training for DEA registrants. A quick search brought up this FDA link, which lists medicine, nursing, and dentistry as branches of medine they were targeting. I couldn't tell if this was mandatory for human-only prescribers or all DEA registrants.

My 5-year-old is Smarter than Most Teenagers
"So, I totally have to brag about my little girl here. For Mother's Day, she made me a bunch of little cards with pictures and phrases like, "I love you, Mommy." There was one she made that said, "You're the best." Spelled "you're" just like that. I was so proud of my little girl. The your/you're and their/there/they're are those grammatical things that I hate the most."
