Thanks for all you did, Bob!
On Saturday, May 5, the VIN Community lost one of its own - VIN Consultant Dr. Bob Rosenthal.

Share your thoughts and memories in this discussion on the VIN message boards.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking people to please consider a donation to one of the organizations that Bob supported:

As a Matter of FAQ...
The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because some topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of "hits" can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards.

Save time and check out the Medical FAQs before you post.

A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure
To help you become the surgeon of your dreams, the VIN consultants have created the Surgery-Soft Tissue Specialty Center. This center contains information on:

  • Gastrointestinal
  • Urological
  • Oncological surgery
  • Hernia repair tips
  • Biopsy techniques
  • Suture selection
  • Wound care
  • Minimally invasive surgery

Check out the links to products and equipment, surgery journals, informational websites, and surgery organizations. You'll also find Instructional slide shows, videos, and images on various surgical topics in the Soft-Tissue Center, along with dozens of other surgical resources.

Find the Surgery-Soft Tissue Specialty Center through the Surgery-Soft Tissue folder About Page and the Specialty Centers in the VIN Library.

Good Things Come in 3s...
The third time is supposed to be a charm, right? Well, Search 3.0 is now the default search on Beta.vin.com.

  • Narrow your results using categorized filters
  • Add or remove filters
  • Take advantage of the "inside" knowledge of the VIN indexing team by checking out their specially highlighted "Best Bets"

Want to see how your results compare to Search 2.0? Click on the yellow box that says "Old Search 2.0" to compare your results.

Not ready for a change? Want to customize your options? Click "Change my Search Preferences" to turn 'Snippets' on or off or reset your default Search to 2.0.

Visual learner? Explore this video tutorial.

If you do switch back to using OLD Search on Beta, please let us know why. Your feedback is needed and always appreciated! Send feedback to Feedback@vin.com. Better yet, share your feedback, suggestions, critiques with all VINners by posting on the message boards.

Round-bale feeder design affects hay waste and economics during horse feeding
Many horse owners find round bales convenient, less labor intensive, and more affordable than other hay types, but report an inability to control horse body weight gain and excessive hay waste. The objectives were to compare hay waste, hay intake, and payback of 9 round-bale feeders and a no-feeder control when used during horse feeding.

Seroprevalence of seven zoonotic infections in Nunavik, Quebec (Canada)
In Nunavik, common practices and food habits such as consumption of raw meat and untreated water place the Inuit at risk for contracting zoonotic diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of seven zoonotic infections among the permanent residents of Nunavik.

Ultrasound-guided serial transabdominal cardiac biopsies in cats
A percutaneous/transdiaphragmatic core needle biopsy technique was developed in cats to obtain serial biopsies from different locations of the left ventricle, through which morphological and molecular changes within the same individual can be studied to unravel the mechanisms of feline cardiomyopathies. Transmural left ventricular myocardial samples were obtained from 29 anesthetized, healthy, adult cats with ultrasound guidance.

Attention-seeking behavior in a dog that will eat only if owner hand feeds her
I also remind owners that dogs are physiologically built for starvation. A pack of wild Frenchies wouldn't successfully bring down a caribou every day, so they're adapted to be able to skip meals without lasting ill effects.

What discounts do specialists give to referring veterinarians?
If you work in referral medicine, what is your policy? If you are a primary care doctor, what discounts do you currently receive from your specialty hospital? What do you think is fair, and what would make you feel appreciated?

Minimally-invasive post-mortem tests were performed without consent: Should owner be informed of results?
If your action could even remotely create a situation where your conscience is going to bother you afterwards, then don't do it.
