Anatomy of Employment Agreements
The VIN Foundation produced this contract template to help alleviate the sometimes complicated contract negotiations scenario. The template is an example of a fair and balanced veterinary contract, which you can alter as necessary. Those who have used it say it helped them work through the details without creating feelings of adversity between employer and employee. Find the Model Employment Contract in the Legal Specialty Center (under contracts). You can also find a link to the VIN Foundation Library in the Practice Management Aids - Other Tools and Misc. sections of the Main library.
Every Picture Tells a Story
Ansel Adams once said, “When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs.” Images are immensely valuable in teaching and sharing ideas on cases. Thanks, in large part, to contributions from many VINners, the Image Library contains hundreds of photos, radiographs, ultrasounds, illustrations and other images. The library is divided into easy to use categories and sections and can be reached through the Multimedia Center or the Specialty Centers in the VIN Main Library. If you'd like to contribute to the Image Library, please contact us at Library@vin.com.

Are ocular tonometry, electrocardiography, and blood pressure measurement useful in screening geriatric animals?
In our small animal clinic we offer our older patients a Senior Health Screen every January and February. The animals are dropped off for the morning or sometimes the entire day and we start with a thorough physical examination. We write a complete report that is mailed to the client and call them to let them know our findings and recommendations. In 2010 we hired a new graduate who sat down with me recently and he has expressed concern this year regarding performing an EKG, blood pressure and intra-ocular pressure on every older patient. His concerns boil down to the following.
Treatment for leopard tortoises after ivermectin and praziquantel ingestion; monograph about tortoise respiratory diseases
I don't think that there is any cause for concern with respect to this strain not being protected against by currently available vaccines nor being more virulent than endemic strains (assuming it is, in fact, a "new" European strain). Certainly, all dogs should be appropriately vaccinated to be protected against any threat of canine distemper and it is always out there.
New graduate in practice that is a poor fit: is it time to move on?
I have discovered that this job definitely hasn't been the right fit for me. Unfortunately, I didn't receive nearly as much mentoring as I had been led to believe I would get, so I found my first year to be a very steep and stressful learning curve where I was often on my own completely (or turning to VIN, or vet friends for help). There's also been many other causes for tension and pressure which I won't elaborate on - I already know this position isn't right for me, so there's no point dwelling on the negatives. I am honestly at the point where I am questioning giving up on the profession.
