Families and Their Pets

Another sister (I have three) calls late at night (I'm asleep), with question about dog that she recently acquired from my dad. My dad is also a vet, and I've never seen dog. I asked her why she didn't call dad-- "Because dad'll get mad if I wake him up..."

An Epidemiological Approach to Welfare Research in Zoos: The Elephant Welfare Project
The goals of this project are to document the prevalence of positive and negative welfare states in 291 elephants exhibited in 72 Association of Zoos and Aquariums zoos and then determine the environmental, management, and husbandry factors that impact elephant welfare. This research is the largest scale nonhuman animal welfare project ever undertaken by the zoo community, and the scope of environmental variables and welfare outcomes measured is unprecedented.

Differentials And Prognosis For Young German Shepherd With Monocytosis, Thoracic Masses, And Hypercalcemia (Radiographs)
I suspect that it's not lymphoma, but acute lymphoblastic leukemia, likely of T-cell origin, and that it originated in the thymus. I have seen a number of those in young GSDs over the years and the prognosis is not good -- even worse than lymphoma. (The cells look identical on cytology. We would need flow cytometry to confirm.)

Prognosis For Horse With Articular Coffin Bone Fracture; Preparing Hoof For Radiographs To Minimize Artifacts
For ideal hoof rads, you need the horse on a debris-free surface. You need a *very* clean (scrubbed) hoof. And you need the frog grooves and other hollows packed with vaseline or play-dough. You can then put a paper towel on the sole to help minimize it picking up grit.

Owner Wants A Letter Stating Her 4 Year Old Bitch Should Not Be Spayed: Are There Real Concerns With Respect To Behavior Changes, Orthopedic Diseases, And Neoplasia?
In Sweden, where dogs are intact until a medical problem makes it otherwise and nearly all dogs are insured, 70% of bitches have pyometra, mammary cancer, or both by the age of 10.
