Weekend CE has Gone to the Dogs!
If you're looking for some good CE on the West Coast but can't take a lot of time away from your practice, consider attending the 12th Annual Canine Medicine Symposium presented by the UCD Canine Medicine Club on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3. The symposium offers 13 hours of CE credit on a wide range of topics. Review the 2008 Canine Medicine Symposium proceedings.
New Proceedings In the VIN Library
The VIN Library is your one stop resource for Conference, meeting and symposium proceedings. Browse proceedings by an alphabetical list of conferences or chronologically by year. Check out the archives for proceedings from 1999 and earlier. Newly added: VIN CE Survey Since 1991, VIN has offered online continuing education courses. Please help your VIN community by taking this brief survey. (It should take less than 10 minutes to complete.) Thanks for being part of the VIN community and thanks for helping improve it!

Thrombin physiology and pathophysiology
The activation of FXIII by thrombin results in the formation of covalent bonds between fibrin glutamate and lysine residues and subsequent cross-linking of the clot. This is why FXIII is also called fibrin-stabilizing factor.
Increasing patient safety in veterinary transfusion medicine: an overview of pretransfusion testing
If transfusions are being given, pretransfusion testing is no longer reserved for specialized veterinary care centers. It should be the standard of care before all RBC transfusions.
Evaluation of low-molecular-weight heparin for the prevention of equine laminitis after colic surgery
LMWH inhibits MPO activity and its uptake by endothelial cells. Thus, LMWH would have the power to inhibit the MMP activation pathway by acting on the enzymes that transform the pro-MMP into active MMP.

Caring for a seal pup
The most urgent question is: what part of the time should it be in the water (how cold) and what part of the time outside?
What should students learn in school?
When compared to veterinary medicine, they put much less value in teaching students about the business of veterinary medicine which is shown by the very little time allocated to the subject of veterinary business.
Periodontal disease and endocarditis: recent conflicting studies
Clinically we see loads of dogs with stage 4 periodontal disease without any signs of heart failure. If there was a direct association, most every older Poodle, Yorkie, and Maltese would have major heart issues.
Inappropriate urination in 2 year old dog that was never housebroken: what should we consider before doing medical procedures?
This is a totally different view point and it makes total sense. The owners and I talked about wanting to make sure there are no medical problems before starting down the behavior road, but you have an excellent argument.
