Working in a Multi-Doctor Practice? Ask about Group Membership Rates!
Colleagues working in the same practice qualify for group membership rates! Each practitioner enjoys the benefit of an individual account and personal login - maintaining preferences and professionalism - with the added convenience and savings of Group Membership billing. Remember, there is no such thing as a VIN 'Hospital' membership where all colleagues use the same login. Every colleague at every hospital must have their own account/login, even if the billing is handled as a group membership within their hospital. (Check out this discussion on the VIN message boards to see how your fellow VINners feel about sharing.) This FAQ will explain how group memberships work. If you still have questions contact membership services at vingram@vin.com, or call membership services at 1-800-700-4636 (toll free) or 1-530-756-4881 (locally) or 01 45 222 6154 in the UK.

New Login Page With More Help
The Login page on Beta.vin.com has a different look, but VIN Security has NOT changed. The old login page had a single purpose - to log in. The goal for the new page is to include solutions and guidance for the most common login issues and to make it more “mobile device friendly". Keep an eye on this section of VIN This Week to learn about the latest toys on Beta.vin.com. If you want to be on the "bleeding edge" make Beta.vin.com your VIN Homepage.

Use of end-to-side arterial and venous anastomosis techniques for renal transplantation in two dogs
The end-to-side anastomosis technique described here, which is a preferred method in human medicine, was successful, providing an alternative to other renal transplantation techniques in dogs. Additional studies are needed to determine whether any vascular anastomosis technique is preferable for use in dogs requiring renal transplantation.
Development of a diagnostic diagram for rapid field assessment of acidosis severity in diarrheic calves
Severe metabolic acidosis (extracellular base excess more negative than -10 mmol/L) was associated with abnormal mental status, delayed or absent suckle reflex, abnormal posture or gait, enophthalmos, and cold oral mucosal membranes. Clinical signs associated with severe metabolic acidosis were arranged into a grid to create a diagnostic diagram. Sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic diagram for the prediction of severe metabolic acidosis were 88% and 79%, respectively.
Effects of ivabradine on heart rate and left ventricular function in healthy cats and cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Ivabradine had significant effects on several cardiovascular variables in anesthetized cats with HCM. Studies in awake cats with HCM are needed to clinically validate these findings.

Will real time processing of pet insurance claims help or hinder veterinary practices?
Third party payments were the beginning of the downfall in the human medical field. Hoping veterinary medicine never goes that route.
How do solo practice veterinarians cope?
I have found solo practice to have its ups and downs and wondered if there is a thread, a group, an email list, or support group of VINNERs that are solo docs that I can join. I know there are many solo docs that post on various threads, including practice management, so I know you all are out there.
Difficulty sleeping if working graveyard shifts
I am mildly embarrassed to admit, after over 15 years in the field of emergency medicine, with nearly 4 of them as a veterinarian, I am finding it increasingly difficult to "prepare" myself for my graveyard shifts (of which there are many as a resident). I have tried staying up until 4-5 am the night before I start my run of overnights, then sleeping until 3 pm. Sometimes that works, but sometimes my environment wakes me up, or I just can't sleep past 11 am. I've also tried staying up until midnight, then sleeping for 5-6 hours, getting up for 4, then going back to bed for a ~4 hour sleep before getting up for good for my shift.
