SPECIAL NOTE: No Heartbleed at VIN
Several VINners have written asking if they should be concerned about the Heartbleed vulnerability reportedly impacting 2/3 of the internet this week.

The VIN Geeks have researched the issue and confirmed that no related vulnerabilities exist in servers or hardware in the VIN network that could impact the security of VIN or VINner information.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail...
...only he's not a fuzzy rabbit, he's a trembling Schnauzer and he hasn't come to hide eggs in your waiting room. He's just eaten a bag of chocolate treats and now he's come to show you how they look regurgitated on your waiting room floor.

Don't panic! Enter the dog's weight, the type of chocolate and the amount consumed into the handy Chocolate Toxicity Calculator to help you plan your treatment strategy.

The MyCalculations suite allows you to save your patients' data so you can compare, print, and share results from different visits. You'll find MyCalculations in the VIN Library and the VINDEX (Calc./Conversions).

The Tax Man Cometh
Need a summary of your 2013 VIN Community membership and related fees for tax purposes? Try the easy Membership Statement tool in your MyVIN. Click on MyVIN in the main navigation bar near the top of the page. From there, choose Membership > Statement.

Your VIN membership and online access charges are likely tax deductible; check with your tax professional.

If you have any questions or concerns about your statement, please email feedback@vin.com and the wonderful VIN membership team will be happy to help.

Canine pyoderma gangrenosum: a case series of two dogs
Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare disease distinguished by rapid progression of painful, necrolytic, cutaneous ulcers with irregular, violaceous undermined borders. Azathioprine with glucocorticoids may lead to a better outcome than ciclosporin and glucocorticoids (currently the first-line treatment in humans and the only reported treatment in dogs).

Veterinary Medical Student Well-being: Depression, Stress, and Personal Relationships
Students within higher-functioning relationships are more likely to report fewer depressive symptoms, lower stress associated with balancing their school and home lives, less relationship conflict, better physical health, and improved ability to cope with academic expectations, while at the same time experiencing more stress from being behind in studies.

Feline endometrial adenocarcinoma in females <1 year old: a description of four cases
In this study, the four clinical situations are described and discussed on the basis of available literature, highlighting the aspects that may impair an early diagnosis and that may favour the progression of the disease and also that age should not be an excluding criteria when analysing the differential diagnosis list.

Is Masticatory Muscle Myositis A Heritable Trait In Labrador Retrievers?
The AKC registers over 40,000 *litters* of Labradors annually. There is no shortage of Labradors. There is only a shortage of *good* Labradors. Breeding one with a disease with a known predilection for this breed and, therefore, certainly a genetic component will not produce better dogs than already exist.

Phacoemulsification Vs. Lens Replacement For Lanner Falcon With Cataracts
This is getting exciting. After consulting with a number of people -- including vet ophtho people, bird people, raptor people, and optics people, we have decided to try to do IOL replacement in this bird. It has been reported only once...

How Should We Treat Cat That Has Multiple Pellet Shots To Head?
I would remove any pellets that are easily located. I would not do major dissections to find them. My philosophy is that they may not cause harm by being there, but they can't cause harm if they are not there.

What Is The Prognosis For A Litter Of 3 Week Old Puppies That Appear To Be Blind?
At 3 weeks of age, it is very difficult to assess vision (or lack thereof) in a puppy. The retinas are very immature at this stage and the puppies don't typically respond very noticeably to visual stimuli.

      Why do fecals?
"On healthy pets, why not just deworm every year instead of doing fecals? Fecal is a lousy test. We know all puppies and kittens are born with round
worms, why not just deworm them?"
