VIN and the World of Research
“If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” - Albert Einstein

You've read lots of research results on VIN, but did you know that VIN is a research entity in its own right? Join Mark Rishniw, BVSc, MS, PhD, DACVIM (Cardiology & IM), this Sunday night at 10 p.m. for VIN and the World of Research to find out more about:

  • VIN's impact on veterinary research
  • Research projects conducted through VIN
  • How VIN has helped other researchers
  • How the VIN research model works
  • How YOU can participate

This session will use audio. Are you ready? Take the Readiness Test.

Alcohol-facilitated ankylosis of the distal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints in horses with osteoarthritis.
Intra-articular alcohol injection in horses with bone spavin resulted in a rapid (usually within 3 months) reduction in lameness and joint space collapse.

Safety and efficacy of laparoscopic hepatic biopsy in dogs: 80 cases (2004-2009)
Results suggested that laparoscopic hepatic biopsy is a safe procedure in dogs, with low morbidity and mortality rates, that typically yields sufficient samples for histologic examination. However, because of the possibility of disagreement among histologic diagnoses, multiple samples should be obtained.

Long-term results of surgery for atresia ani with or without anogenital malformations in puppies and a kitten: 12 cases (1983-2010)
Medical records of 2 veterinary teaching hospitals were reviewed for puppies and kittens that underwent surgical treatment for AA. Information regarding signalment, diagnosis, surgical procedures, follow-up time, and outcome was recorded. A previously described classification scheme was used to classify AA as type I, II, III, or IV. Follow-up times and outcomes were evaluated.

What could cause deaths of multiple sled dogs in a pack?
I was presented with a yearling female pointer cross husky sled dog this morning for necropsy. She was alive at 11 pm last night, Dead at 7 this morning when owner went to let dogs out. Housed in a kennel building with 10 other similar dogs. 3 died. No camera or monitoring between 11 and 7. Woman is a pro. Boarding kennel owner, sled dog racer, etc, etc. She is going down the bad dog food pathway. Especially, she suspects a raw ground chicken product. I'm relatively certain they weren't gassed, overheated, medicated, poisoned, or asphyxiated. This chicken is probably being fed by 1000+ sled dog racers, so I wouldn't jump on that right away. I am absolutely flumoxed.

Job hunting tips for new graduates
I am currently a 4th year vet student at an accredited university in the midwest. We have less than 6 months remaining of our clinical year, and I should be super excited about graduating and finally starting my veterinary career, but instead I find myself extremely worried about landing even one job offer. I am finding myself in a job market that has changed and the balance of supply and demand of veterinarians has appeared to shift immensely.

Dog with non-healing wound and draining tracts at site of stick penetration
VIN-DI-CATION!!!! After a year of draining tracts and MRSA bugs, Sadie had a CT today at Purdue. It showed a giant stick still in the subcutaneous tissue. Stick removed. Hopefully, no more problems!!! WHOOOOOOOP!!

It's better than the Muppets
Considering how much my 6-year-old daughter likes surgery, anatomy, blood, and guts, I think that she could have a somewhat specialized but ultimately interesting career. When she was 3, she told me, "Mommy, you love me, but sometimes I freak you out." Yes, like when you matter of factly proclaim that "Plague Dogs" is your favorite movie.
