Survey of the frequency and perceived stressfulness of ethical dilemmas encountered in UK veterinary practice
The results show that veterinary surgeons regularly face ethical dilemmas and that they find these stressful. This has implications for the wellbeing of veterinary surgeons and supports the case for increased provision of training and support, especially for those who entered the profession before undergraduate ethics teaching was widely available.

Frontal sinus depth at four landmarks in breeds of dog typically affected by sinonasal aspergillosis
CT scans of the head performed at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, University of Liverpool, between April 2007 and March 2009 for dogs diagnosed with aspergillosis (group 1) and unaffected dogs of similar breeds (group 2) were selected for study. Sinus depth was measured at four standardised locations from reconstructed images of these CT scans.

Haemostatic alterations in a group of canine cancer patients are associated with cancer type and disease progression
Haemostatic alterations are commonly detected in human and canine cancer patients. Previous studies have described haemostatic dysfunction in canine patients with haemangiosarcomas and carcinomas, and haemostasis has been assessed in dogs with various malignant and benign neoplasias.

Standard of care in pain management for surgical desexing of shelter animals
I have now seen at least three animals in the past year who have come to me as a new puppy or kitten, from the local shelter, been spayed or neutered the same day or the previous day, and had been given NOTHING for pain. They were obviously painful and shaking and the new owners just thought they were scared from the new environment/stress of adoption.

Home euthanasia for cats
Does anyone refuse to do feline home euthanasia? Seems to me these are always the most stressful, as sedation sometimes can be a bit tricky (meaning they may not be totally anesthetized prior to euth solution IV), then you have the added challenge of finding a vein in front of the owner, or if you can't find a vein and use intracardiac or intrarenal it may be a bit disturbing for the owners.

Radiographs of dog with 4.5 pounds of gravel in stomach
I have a 4-year-old lab in front of me with the presenting complaint of having eaten gravel. I could actually feel the gravel in the gastric fundus on physical exam. When I x-rayed him, not only was his stomach packed with gravel, but he was torsed as well. Now I am trying to figure out how I derotate a stomach I can't decompress without first performing a gastrotomy to remove all the gravel. Anyone have hints? PS - dogs are really stupid.

Our hospital cat, Fraser, is very patient and laid back, as can be seen in his photo on the Anti Stress post. He's also quite handsome and friendly, so he is popular with our regular clients, some of whom come in just to visit with him. We got a phone call last week from the daughter of one such client asking us, "Who is Fraser? My dad is on vacation in Florida and he wants to send Fraser a post card." Keep in mind, her dad is in his 60s, is fully in control of his faculties, and is a fairly big, slightly gruff man, who is actually a retired cop. This (postcard) arrived this morning...

OSHA & Practice Safety
April 9 - July 12, 2011

This course is designed for the Practice Owner, Manager or Administrator who desires to understand OSHA's Standards as well as practical ways to implement them in a veterinary practice. We attempt to avoid debating the merits of any particular requirement and focus on how to achieve compliance! This course will cover ALL aspects of a hospital safety program, not just the Hazard Communication Standard. The participants will be provided with many downloadable resources, including the actual text versions of applicable standards.

Systems B: Organ System Pathophysiology and ABVP Core Examination Review
April 12 - June 24, 2012

This course is the fourth of six modules of the Organ System Pathophysiology and ABVP Core Examination review course. The organ system-based modules build on the on foundations of pathophysiology and medicine in modules 1 and 2, using concepts and disease examples specific to the various body systems.

For your staff:
Canine and Feline Vaccination
Basic Hematology: The Bloody Truth About Canines and Felines
