Comparison of short-term complication rates between dogs and cats undergoing appositional single-layer or inverting double-layer cystotomy closure: 144 cases (1993-2010)
An appositional single-layer suture pattern for cystotomy closure was a safe and effective procedure with minimal risk of urine leakage and a short-term complication rate of 37%. The appositional single-layer suture pattern for cystotomy closure may be recommended for clinical use because the inverting double-layer suture pattern offered no clear advantage.

Inflammatory bowel disease in veterinary medicine
Canine and feline inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) denotes a heterogeneous group of idiopathic, chronic, relapsing inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract that are immunologically-mediated. While their exact etiologies remain unknown, results from basic science and clinical studies suggest that interplay between genetic factors and enteric bacteria are crucial for disease development, owing to abnormal host responses directed against the commensal microbiota.

Oncolytic virotherapy in veterinary medicine: current status and future prospects for canine patients
Oncolytic viruses refer to those that are able to eliminate malignancies by direct targeting and lysis of cancer cells, leaving non-cancerous tissues unharmed. Several oncolytic viruses including adenovirus strains, canine distemper virus and vaccinia virus strains have been used for canine cancer therapy in preclinical studies.

Use of ultrasound in the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal polyps in cats
This is an 8-year-old cat with eosinophilic keratitis (severe) o.s. due to lagophthalmos. The DACVO wanted me to look into possiblity of otitis media. Under anesthesia today, we took four views of the skull. DV VD DV 40 degree oblique of right and DV 40 degree oblique of right. I also got some u/s images to look for fluid vs air. I do not see anything obvious but I need your help. Is this normal or is this bilateral otitis?

Dog with Cushing's disease, elevated liver enzymes, and lethargy
Over the last couple weeks he has become lethargic and a picky eater. No exercise issues, and no cardiac issues i.e. cough, etc. Thirst is up and hair coat is very thin. CBC is pretty good, chemistry not so much. So all normal with the exception of liver enzymes. There was a bit of a communication break down and the dog was started on Clavamox prior to urine culture.

Development of peritonitis following episode of cystitis in a cat; effects of ligating a hepatic duct or the common bile duct
Ultrasound showed no changes in the bladder and routine hematology and biochemistry were within normal limits. They started him on enrofloxacin (but no culture was done as far as I know), tramadol and after one day of IVFT was sent home. The cat is still straining and I was thinking of starting him on Urispas. As there is not much information on it and it is reported to be a detrusor muscle relaxant. I was wondering, what do you think of its use for a suspected urethral spasm in a cat?

You have mail
Our hospital cat, Fraser, is very patient and laid back, as can be seen in his photo on the Anti Stress post. He's also quite handsome and friendly, so he is popular with our regular clients, some of whom come in just to visit with him. We got a phone call last week from the daughter of one such client asking us, "Who is Fraser? My dad is on vacation in Florida and he wants to send Fraser a post card." Keep in mind, her dad is in his 60s, is fully in control of his faculties, and is a fairly big, slightly gruff man, who is actually a retired cop. This (postcard) arrived this morning...
